Pink Floyd fans around the world are mourning the passing of Richard Wright, who died of cancer today at age 65. Wright was a founding member of Pink Floyd and a contributing writer to many of the group’s memorable tracks, such as “Us And Them” and “The Great Gig In The Sky,” from ‘Dark [...]
It's hard to believe that it has been a year since Soularize 2007 in the Bahamas. It was a such an amazing event and below is just a sample why. The videos below were taken from a round table discussion that took place between Tom Wright, Richard Rohr, and Brennan Manning one evening. The entire 30+ minute exchange was video taped, but what appears below is each responding to a question posed by Barry Taylor on the future of the Church in a "post-everything" world. It was fascinating to see thei
Walter Brasch, who has written many well-received Guest Voice posts for TMV has sent this Guest column, which we run in full here. His note: Deanne Stillman is one of the nation’s best journalists, and an advocate of the nation’s wild horses and burros. The Bureau of Land Management, under the Bush-Cheney Administration, has been yielding to the pressure of the cattlemen’s associations, which want wild horses and burros removed from public lands. The BLM solution has been to round up the a

On Tuesday it was announced that the Indianapolis Museum of Art was given the generous gift of the J. Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana by the family and foundation of J. Irwin and Xenia Simons Miller. The house was designed by Eero Saarinen from 1953-1957, and is one of only two houses ever built by Eero Saarinen. The other, a collaboration in 1950 with Charles Eames for the famous Case Study House program, is the John Entenza House (case study #9) in Pacific Palisades, California. As an
We’ve never spent too much time pondering the Confrontation Clause. In fact, it doesn’t appear to have ever been mentioned on the Law Blog. So here goes. Are a witness’s swastika tattoos admissible as evidence of bias when the witness is testifying in the trial of a Hispanic man? The Second Circuit ruled recently, in U.S. v. Figueroa, that a district judge’s refusal to allow a defense lawyer to cross examine a government witness about his swastika tattoos violated the Confrontation Clause. (H

By Dayo Olopade | TheRoot.com Chicago's power class comes to Washington. Nov. 17, 2008--Chicago, the town where Barack Obama arrived without knowing a soul in 1985, is suddenly the center of the political world and—if past and present trends are any indication—will continue to wield considerable influence after Obama sets up shop in the White House. If his recent interview with 60 Minutes was any clue, Obama loves Chicago and doesn't mind governing from home. He favored local
It never fails. When I talk with my slightly older colleagues about today’s college students, they will often complain about the lack of engagement and energy by young Americans. Rather than protest and idealistically seek some kind of alternative understanding of reality, they play gameboys or get lost in facebook and IM. Yet something happened in this election campaign — the generation of 2008 handed the 1968s a lesson in political efficacy that can’t go unnoticed. In 1968 the active, prot
Steve Hamm’s new book The Race for Perfect is finally released. The book builds and expands on the cover story BusinessWeek Magazine article that Steve co-authored about the design and development of the Lenovo ThinkPad X300. I finally managed to carve out enough time to read my copy of the book. Unfortunately it’s been hard for me to squeeze in reading something other than e-mails lately. The book did not disappoint me, it’s both entertaining and an accurate portrayal of the Kodachi story.

Now here's a painting worth buying for the nation: Joseph Wright of Derby's portrait of Lancashire cotton king Sir Richard Arkwright (1785). London's National Portrait Gallery and the Harris Museum in Preston - the city where Arkwright was born in 1732 - teamed up to buy the portrait. The Art Fund put £100,000 into the pot, and the National Heritage Memorial Fund added £132,000. The painting cost £420,000, which is a bargain in terms of art-market silly prices. Not only is it of historic importa
Yesterday I looked at what my algorithm thought were the ten top NCAA programs in terms of producing NFL talent. Today, we’ll look at some other teams of interest. Just missing the top 10 is my alma mater, a school which has had moderate success at various times, but isn’t thought of as a football power: Arizona St. QB Jake Plummer 76 RB John Henry Johnson 57 RB Gerald Riggs 54 RC Charley Taylor 82 RC Jerry Smith 71 RC John Jefferson 54 RC Larry Walton 42 T Marvel Smith 45 T Levi Jones 34 G Ra
Darren Ganga, Adrian Barath & MOM Carl Wright hit 50’s Man-of-the match Carl Wright in full flow By Franklin Wilson A match winning second-wicket partnership of 140 between Captain Darren Ganga, who led from the front with 79 off 96 balls decorated with five elegant fours, and opening batsman Adrian Barath who smashed 67 from 79 deliveries laced with four fours and the only six of the innings, guided Trinidad and Tobago to a comfortable six wicket win over the United States of America (US
The Giants bullpen in 2008 for some reason reminds me of the making of the Pink Floyd song, “The Great Gig in the Sky“. In recording the song, the Floyds told vocalist Clare Torry to record various takes at differing volumes and pitches, not worrying about following any melody. Then the band would use these different takes, meld them together to fit the tune written by Richard Wright (R.I.P.), and combine it all into something beautiful (which is exactly what they did). Likewise, the Giants pat
