I finally got all the way through this double DVD set from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. This massive one day concert took place in Chicago last July, which is the second get together of these guitar legends. This follows slowhand’s first guitar festival, which stretched over a three day weekend [...]
About the Blues By Liz Lottmann I felt like I was a member of Blues Traveler in October, I was traveling around chasing the blues so much. In September I went to Indianola, Miss., for the grand opening of the B.B. King Museum. A little public disclosure here – I wanted also to be sure that all my blues friends attending the museum’s opening would come next door to the Gin Mill for a drink and lunch. Hubby and I have a personal interest in seeing that business do well, but even without that, b
Numerous guitar legends gathered together in June of 2004 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, to play a benefit show for Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center, a nonprofit addiction treatment facility in Antigua. Offering a stunning array of legendary acts, the talent assembled for the show was a music lover's dream come true, and this document of the event allows those who weren't there to experience the magic. Including performances by BB King, James Taylor, Carlos Santana, Joe Walsh, Jimmie Vaugh
Jim Pugh, the keyboard player for the Robert Cray Band, refers to the songs on his new album as sketches. It seems to me that they're a lot more than that. The 10 tunes on the CD, "Background for a Soulful Life," are intricate musical portraits painted with sure strokes on his Hammond organ. On his Website, Pugh says he plays what he heard as a young musician working at the Stardust Lounge in San Francisco. There's blues, to be sure, and soul jazz in the style of the great Hammond B3 master Jimmy
Editors and readers and neighbors and party stars are all rattling my cage today, wondering why I haven't collated the Ultimate Halloween Playlist: 2008 Edition. My reason, dear friends, is as universal as life and death: I got hit with a fish this morning, and it freaked me out. But alas, I can't deny pleasure to my peeps, so click on that link right below, and get your Halloween hopping just right. Special thanks to the dozens of loyal Pop Lifers -- especially Bassnote and KJW -- who unloade
TONY ENGLEHART: BLUES AND MEAT >>> A barbecue in October? Why not? The South Sound Blues Association is holding a Summer Ending Party at Jambalaya featuring the Brown and Blues Band. One of the only true Chicago styled blues bands in the Northwest, the Brown and Blues band have a deep understanding of how blues was meant to be played. With driving shuffles and heartfelt slow blues, the Tacoma-based quartet doesn’t subscribe to Robert Cray’s contemporary styled “blues,” but rather have
The Beer: Say hello to the Naughty Nellie Ale from the Pike Brewing Company in Seattle, Washington. She pours a clear light gold with a small foamy head that forms a thin but long lasting lace. Hops and mild fruits waft out of the glass tempting you to go one.step.further. Clean and bright citrus-type hops hit the tongue with a slight bitterness that changes to soft husky malts and finishes with a faint hint of pears. This is a true session brew to share with your buddies, maybe... Contains 4.
You have to earn your stripes to be called a legend. After 40 years of bluesing it out in the business, Elvin Bishop has certainly earned the reputation of a legend, easily one of the most respected living white blues guitarist of his generation. From his early days on the mean streets of Chicago, to his genre-bending stint with the Butterfield Blues Band on to his own solo work, Bishop has been there and done it all. Widely recognized as a master of the slide guitar, Bishop's last album, 2005's

That was before lunch. Shortly after dinner I headed downtown to Berbati’s for the full show. The entire bill is important to Back Door Slam. This past summer saw them opening for the likes of Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd in stadiums around the country. Next month, a theater tour opening for jam band stalwarts, Gov’t Mule drives the point home. So it was no surprise that they had two strong openers themselves. Local favorites, The Jacob Merlin Band began the festivities with a bang. With t
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live at the El Mocambo Binding: VHS Tape Manufacturer: Sony Amazon.com: In 1990, Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan was just emerging from a long period in which drugs had taken their toll: the previous year's In Step album was the first he had made drug free, and the results were a marvel. But then, after sharing a stage with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Eric Clapton, he boarded a helicopter to Chicago. It crashed, and the career of one of the great blues guitarists w
It used to be that you had to really earn a signature guitar by years of service to the music industry and by creating something unique. These days it seems you just need to be in a popular band in order to put your name on a guitar that is hardly any different to the original stock version. The guitar brands are cashing in, just check out Fender and ESP who have 25 and 22 signature guitars respectively. So what makes a signature guitar worth buying? Well the original signature model was
If I were a rockstar and CMR were a moto-cross guy and he treated me badly and we broke up, I would sing this song: (It's a little vulgar, so if you're easily offended, just skip it!) So What - Pink (official music video) I couldn't be much less like Pink if I tried, but man, I'd love to be her for one day. I saw her open for Justin Timberlake--I'll explain THAT in a minute--last year and she was amazing. Great performance and she can really sing. Last year, with my 40th birthday looming,

I’m not much of a modern blues guy; in fact a lot of my pals like to refer to me as a crusty-old, close-minded, purist curmudgeon. ‘Tis true, I’d much rather listen to old Chuck Berry blues instrumentals, ancient John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, early ’70s blues-funk throwdowns from Albert and B.B. King, or even early- 50s R&B than polished, slick Robert Cray or horned-up 2008 urban blues. Because to me, nothing says “hard luck and trouble” like a perfectly digitally sparkling pristine rec

The Mountainside Inn nestles right up to the steep slopes of Telluride Mountain. It’s hard to find a building that isn’t close to the green and rocky slopes that cradle the town, but that’s just Telluride. This weekend would be Back Door Slam’s first time to the area, but only a small stop on a tour that has lasted for over 200 shows and had them supporting the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rusted Root just to name a few. Davy Knowles (guitar, vocals) spent the day checking out the town with tou

By Robert Bowen When scouring the design field, searching for stand-out artistic expression and fluid composition, one area that should always catch the eye, is poster design. Moreover, concert poster design, which has produced some truly revolutionary artists and works for generations now, should be paid particular attention to. Fluidity of design is especially key in poster layouts, as there is a finite space, and numerous points to capture and pass along within these confines. The designe
