Top 10 Monster Hits of Halloween

Gibson Guitars website has a great article posted about the top ten monster songs for Halloween. Author Russell Hall added a nice touch by including a YouTube video for each song. I agree with most of the picks, but a couple of these tunes really spooked me!

The Reversible Cords -st,LP,1980,USA

Great Texas ,Austin art punk band here. Female vocals, DIY sound, reminds a mix of Blodie with Kleenex, with a big blend of the Slits sounding. Manny unusual for a punk band instruments,as accordeon and sax. Band had backed Roky Erickson . Worth a close listening and exploration! They released just this LP and a 7" e.p. before splitting up .get it here

Okkervil River: Okkervil River interview on Pitchfork TV (Video)

This Pitchfork TV interview with Okkervil River is easily the best video interview that's appeared on the site-- the band sits down at a long table in some board room and talk about having a chore chart in the bus (which one of them calls un-rock-and-roll), the loaded notion of authenticity, and playing with Roky Erickson. There's a second part promised for tomorrow. [Pitchfork TV]

13th Floor Elevators - Live at the Avalon Ballroom 1966

The 13th Floor Elevators should need no introduction here at Digital Meltd0wn. I have covered their studio albums, as well as several solo albums by singer Roky Erickson, here in the past. This recording has been issued under various titles over the years, with the album cover and track listings for each version differing from one another. While this may be frustrating for collectors, what truly matters is that this recording offers a rare peak at the Elevators performing live while they were a

The Summer Wardrobe - Cajun Prairie Fire (Sauspop)

The Summer Wardrobe’s sophomore release, Cajun Prairie Fire seamlessly blends psychedelic-rock and country to produce an album fit for acid rockers and Caballeros alike. Staying loyal to the guitar driven sound of last year’s self-titled debut, the Summer Wardrobe makes a triumphant return, six-string and pedal steel blazing. The influence of greats like Roky Erickson, for whom the band played back up for a year, is much more evident on this latest release. Although at some points the ne

Paging Dr. Octagon.

"If rap has ever produced a Syd Barrett it has probably been Kool Keith. Or maybe he is more of a Roky Erickson. Kool Keith was one of the founding members of the old school hip-hop combo The Ultramagnetic MCs. After the MCs imploded Keith kinda snapped and ended up in Bellevue City Mental Hospital where he suffered from what sounds like some sort of delusional schizophrenia. After release from the mental hospital, Keith changed his name to Dr Octagon and released this insane platter on the worl

Red Temple Spirits - Dancing To Restore An Eclipsed Moon (1988)

Los Angeles quartet Red Temple Spirits skillfully mix post-punk influences - mid-period Cure, Savage Republic, early (Death) Cult - with a loving dose of lysergic psychedelia (Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson are particular touchstones). Bassist Dino Paredes and guitarist Dallas Taylor coax entrancing drones and pulses from thier instruments with judicious uses of echoe and other effects, while shamanistic frontman William Faircloth (a colorful immigrant from Britain's original '60s psychedelic mov

Doug Sahm Getting Tribute Treatment

It’s about time, we say. Doug Sahm, the Tex Mex master and pinnacle of cosmic cowboyness is getting an all star tribute, the Chronicle reports this week. Called Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm, the album is being curated by Bill Bentley, who was also responsible for the Roky Erickson homage Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye. On board to record some Sahmmage are Marcia Ball’s former band Freda and the Firedogs, Terry Allen and Joe Ely together, Alejandro Escovedo, and Jimmie Vaughan. The Go
