PopMatters’com writer Jason Gross has a nice write up on the Legacy Edition release of the Johnny Cash classic country music milestone At Folsom Prison. Gross does a fine job of not only setting the stage for that day at Folsom State Prison in Folsom, California on January 13, 1968 - which this release highlights the full Cash and the Tennessee Three work as well as that of the other players June Carter, Carl Perkins, and The Statler Brothers - but also the recordings place in the cannon of co

However, the award went to Carrie Underwood. Maybe next time Taylor. You are just 18 after all. She’s got lots of time. She still can’t get off the ex situation though. When she sat down with Mario Lopez for Extra, she said that it was a personal goal to write songs about her exes saying “It’s sort of a personal goa
We had a debate in the record library at KEXP. It was mostly me and Ryan, the Programming Intern, but others weighed in. Best band of all time? The Beatles, in my opinion, no contest. Ryan was leaning hard on Led Zeppelin, but although they morphed themselves a transcendent rock sound, they basically took blues songs and “wrote” lyrics that had been written by blues artists years before. And they never credited the blues writers. But the Beatles, their progression WAS the progression of roc

Although Liam Gallagher did not manage to make the The 100 Greatest Singers list in Rolling Stone Magazine's recent poll of fellow peers he can always count on Courtney Love's approval going his way. Rolling Stone published 25 voting ballots for a behind the scenes peek on who some of the stars picked as their favorite singers. Liam ranks a high #18 in Courtney's heart...... Source: Rolling Stone
Truth be told, we were initially going to do an Illustrated Guide on the Smiths, given this new compilation is out, but... well, it's a well worn path, isn't it? So many books, papers, articles, thinkpieces, conference minutes and scrawled notes have been penned on the whole story from New York Dolls letters to Severed Alliance and beyond that by now you can probably come up with a decent explanation yourselves that references working class mores, prosthlytising, English poetry, gender roles, ki

I was floored when I picked up the November issue of GQ and saw in it a 32 page photo essay (online here) shot by one photographer. That’s major. There are very few photographers getting 32 pages in magazines all to themselves these days (anytime actually) and a photo essay of this magnitude is a major deal. The photographer was Jeff Riedel. I’ve worked with Jeff in the past and always admired his photography and work ethic but hadn’t talked to him in awhile so I gave him a call to discuss the
