Every year, the Library of Congress adds to the National Recording Registry. They select 25 recordings that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” to preserve for all time.
Here’s the list of recordings the NRPB, the Library’s National Recording Preservation Board, selected for the 2007 National Recording Registry. It’s great to see some of my favorite artists on this list, of which I’ve bolded below.
(In chronological order:)
“The First Trans-Atlantic Broadcast (March 14, 1925)

Neil Young Honored

May 13th, 2008
By Mike

This is an unusual bit of news about one of my favorite classic rockers, Neil Young. He’s got a new species of spider named after him.
Read the full story at http://news.yahoo.com
Iconic singer and songwriter Neil Young has had an honor bestowed upon him that is not received by many musicians — his own spider.
Young is not the first musician to have a creature named after him. A species of beetle that looks as if it is wearing a tuxedo — the whirligig beetle, or Orectochilus orbisonorum — was named earlier this year after the late rock ‘n’ roll legend Roy Orbison and his widow Barbara.

Paul, Ringo & Larry King

March 31st, 2008
By Mike

CNN just rebroadcast a Larry King interview with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr this past weekend. Originally broadcast last June, the interview also features Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil. They celebrated the first year anniversary of the LOVE show, a high tech blend of modern circus theatre set to an exciting mashup of Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles.
CNN filmed the tribute show from the Beatles Revolution Lounge at the Mirage in Las Vegas. There’s great dialog between Paul and Ringo, and an interesting story from Olivia talking about how George and Guy came to be friends and fans of each other’s work, and combined their talents to create the LOVE show, the first of it’s kind to celebrate the art and music of the Beatles.
The show’s soundtrack features the Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles, from the original Abbey Road studio master tapes. LOVE The soundtrack album has both the stereo CD and the 5.1 surround sound DVD, which does sound awesome. The album won a Grammy this year for the surround sound mix.

Roy Orbison - We’ll take the night
Baby it’s hard sometimes to wake and face this life everyday. Sometimes it’s bad enough to stop and through the good all away. Tonight let’s put the world aside and let go toghether. The night is one place we can hide in each others arms. Dream on [...]

Sparkadia = “Hot Liquid Sex”
It’s all been happening lately for Sydney quartet Sparkadia. They’ve recorded an album with producer Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur, Depeche Mode). Toured throughout Europe. Returned to Australia. Released their album Postcards, which peaked at #23 on the ARIA charts and has recieved considerable airplay on Triple-J. Briefly toured Australia. Then returned to Europe to play, among other shows, a spot in the Glastonbury Festival!  Huge thanks to lead singer Alex Burnett, who was gracious enough t

Feed the Animals -or- Girl Talk, open beats closed, every day I’m hustlin’
Yesterday the inimitable Scott Drummond came to my rescue. Scott is my musical educator, always throwing me new tunes and genres to check out, in addition to being an amazing friend and weekend brunch buddy. He hit me with a world of great stuff, but I want to talk about one artist in particular, Girl Talk. Girl Talk is a DJ who mashes up everything he can get his hands on. It is absolutely not for everyone, but I can’t get enough and makes it Saturday night in my heart when the calendar says

Roy Orbison is a mystery to me.
Roy Orbison is a mystery to me. I really love the hyperbolic lyrics of this song. And Roy singing it is always special Mystery Girl: Darkness falls and she will take me by the hand Take me to some twilight land Where all but love is grey Where time just slips away Without her as my guide Night falls I’m cast beneath here spell Daylight comes our heaven’s torn to hell Am I left to burn And burn eternally She’s a mystery to me She’s a mystery girl She’s a mystery girl In the night of l

Back From Atlanta!!!
Click here to get Free Music at EZ-Tracks.com Bet you all thought I died! I’m starting to wish I had. The trip went well, but I have officially hit my burnout mark. Thats the point when I don’t want to converse with anyone under the age of thirty. Every time I hear a prepubescent voice, the hair on the back of my neck stands up. It’s definitely time for a break. We arrived in Atlanta to stay at a beautiful home with our cottage sponsors. They were amazing hosts, and we never went hungry

Watching the Wheels: a music soundtrack for hyperdrivers
By Niki D’Andrea Normally, my Monday blog is devoted to “Niki’s Weekend Word,” but this past weekend was a bust for me – not because there was nothing going on, but because 1) I felt ill, and 2) It takes $65 to fill my gas tank and less than three days for me to go through it when I’m driving to clubs all over the Valley. The latter challenge has led me to become one of those “hypermilers,” people who try to save on gas by doing simple things like not accelerating like a drag racer when re

TRIGGER: Pretty
Can’t you tell it’s Summer time?    We’ve had some really good days lately with sunshine and fair weather.   As I spend the best part of my days outside with my work it’s always nice to have sun up in the sky making everything look clean and clear and just….well….pretty!   The countryside is looking so green this year after all the Spring rain we had, and I for one am taking great pleasure in looking at the pretty scenes as I travel mile after mile through “England’s green and pleasant land”.

“You Won’t Be Seeing Rainbows Anymore…”
There are all kinds of breakup songs. Some try to make you feel better, some are angry. Some are self-critical, some put the blame on the one that’s gone. And then there’s today’s Song I Never Get Tired Of, Roy Orbison’s “It’s Over.” Greatest opening line ever.

Inno ufficiale

Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele pay tribute to Parisian Girls in Mississippi
Remember when rock was young? When crooners still stole hearts? When young dancers lost themselves beneath bright lights? Then dig the nostalgia of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele. Dent has tapped into the magic of Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Belle and Sebastian, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and all that bustling, French, cafe music you hipsters download onto your ipods and listen to while lounging naked in your bedrooms. Dent May makes the romantic sounds of summer love. His songs h

Blue Mondays.../With A Little Help From My Friends
No dia 30.09.1987, no Cocoanut Grove, nightclub do Ambassador Hotel, L.A.
