“Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” was originally sung by Bessie Smith, and has been covered by a great many artists including Nina Simone and Eric Clapton.
But I’ve never heard this version by the Spencer Davis Group until now. The treatment Steve Winwood gives the song in this video almost reminds me [...]

Volkswagen UK’s ‘Polo confidence’ television commercial has been named ‘Car Ad of the Year’ by Autocar magazine. Also known as the ’singing dog’ ad, the 30 second piece won a public vote conducted by Autocar online. The ad was created by DDB London and features a Jack Russell miming along to the Spencer Davis Group hit I’m a man. It’s pretty cool. Source: Volkswagen via Automoto Portal

Welcome to the Sunday Salon! I'm using this space today to respond to some recent tags. First, I was tagged by three people for the Seven Random Book Facts meme - Wendi at Wendi's Book Corner, Serena at Savvy Verse & Wit, and Melody at Melody's Reading Corner. So, here goes. 1.) My favorite genre is literary fiction. Historical fiction is a close second. 2.) Although I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, I didn't get serious about my book collection until my late

November 6, 2008 Polly-ticks We in the People’s Republic now realise that we have spent a totally deficient amount of time over the last year’s blogging activity on fostering a culture of cynical corrosive nihilism. We are obviously hopelessly out of step with the zeitgeist, what with our all-too-frequent postings on such subjects as the teaching of history, Herbert Spencer, Anglo-Norman linguistics, urban planning, psychological profiling and our interminable difficulties with British Gas. Photo by Bao Nguyen Interview by Chase Turner I got to sit down with Greg Gillis aka Girl Talk before his sold out show at First Avenue on Monday. When I got on the tour bus he was saran wrapping his laptop in preparation for the show. There were vitamin supplements and discarded odwalla juice containers all over the place, apparently everyone on the tour was sick, you’d never know it from the show. We talked about his live show, his album creation process, and those Microsoft “I am a PC”

In a phone interview with Congressman Artur Davis this afternoon, he reiterated his strong support for Josh Segall's campaign in AL-03, and called the recent controversy "unfortunate." To cut to the chase, Congressman Davis said this about Josh Segall: I think he'll be a very fine member of Congress. I endorse the whole Democratic ticket. In fact, I've written a check to Josh. That's the ultimate endorsement you can make. And I've certainly had a number of positive things to say about Josh, a

The suits at MTV weren’t happy to see YouTube come into the picture a few years back to become THE place to watch old music videos. MTV made videos what they are before relegating them to MTV2 in lieu of such brilliant programing as The Real World - Weehawken and True Life: My Son Fucks Goats. This week, MTV finally got in the game by launching MTV Music. The MTV Music portal features over 16,000 videos, Unplugged performances and exclusive MTV concert footage with the promise of much more t
Forgiven by me? Nah. I still can’t get Los Lonely Boys ringtones on my Alltel cell. Waaaaaaaah. C’mon, Boys. Help me out here. No, “Forgiven” is their new album released this summer. I don’t think they need to be forgiven, unless it’s a sin to recruit a new generation of music lovers. My kids give “Superman” six little thumbs up. It’s the hands-down (umm, thumbs up) favorite. It rocks. See their Superman muscles? All the songs on the CD are originals written by the Boys, except “I’m A M

By the end of the season – with the Warriors heading towards a very high lottery spot – Don Nelson is a grizzled al
Given we are celebrating the steaming sound of the Hammond Organ this week, here is the ultimate
The sound of the Hammond organ was a mainstay of rock in the 1970's, from Procol Harum to the Spencer Davis Group, the majesty of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jon Lord, the sometimes ridiculous Rick Wakeman, Uriah Heep.It dissapeared with the death of the first wave of prog, replaced by more sythesisers and computers, but is being single handedly reborn with the great high-energy rock fusion band Niacin. Niacon formed in 1996, named after the B-3 vitamin and the B-3 Hammond organ, with the organ pl
