Isaac Hayes 1942 - 2008

Sixty-five year old music legend Isaac Hayes died Sunday. Of course, I remember Isaac Hayes for his baritone vocals and funky rhythms on his classic hit soundtrack for “Shaft.” He really set the theme for generations of funk and soul musicians with that groundbreaking album. ‘Black Moses’ was also released in 1971, [...]

William Bell: The Soul of a Bell

William Bell: The Soul of a Bell Memphis Music Confidential November 18th, 2008 According to this incredible interview conducted by Heikki Suosalo for the Finnish magazine Soul Express, when William Henry Yarborough was growing up in Memphis in the 1940s, everyone expected him to be a doctor. Then he discovered secular music — and William Bell, as he was known, never looked back. Says Bell: “I started singing in a local Baptist church early, around seven or eight, and I moved to the sec

DVD Review: The Stax DVD (Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story & The Stax/Volt Revue: Live In Norway 1967)

You have to wonder what it is about Memphis Tennessee that so much great music has come out of that city. Sure there are plenty of other cities which are hot beds of musical talent, but it was two independent record companies out of Memphis that created what are arguably the sounds that have most influenced popular music. In the mid-1950's little Sun Records started putting out records that were a strange hybrid of white country and black blues music. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and ot

Chips Moman talks about Willie Nelson

http://www.georgiarhythm.com GaRhythm: Tell me about your association with Willie Nelson. I understand you were a big fan of his. Moman:   I loved Willie Nelson when he first came to Nashville.  He and I and Roger Miller all signed to Tree Music about the same time. And I was really into a lot of his demos that I was playing on and hearing up there.  I really loved Willie Nelson from the first time I ever heard him. GaRhythm:   So that’s how you wound up working with Waylon and Willie both

Funny, I was just relistening the other day to...

...the podcast from back in Feb with the Music Thing guy talking about evil modern recording techniques, the loudness war, MAroon 5 building a song from a load of half baked ideas and all that. "O What A Night" was quoted then as a tune which is, of course produced well, but jumps from the speakers because of the great performance. Of course, what was the next tune I listened to? Yup and it's an amazing song amazingly performed. I guess the same goes for a load of those old tunes. Wonder why th

Review: Alice Russell - Pot of Gold

I’ve been a fan of Alice Russell’s ever since her work with the Quantic Soul Orchestra, and her latest solo effort, Pot of Gold, does not disappoint. As much as I’m a huge fan of other British girl vocalists like Amy Winehouse and Duffy, I’ll go out on a limb and say that Russell can sing circles around all of them. Russell has recorded or performed with just about everyone – Massive Attack, the Roots, Femi Kuti, De La Soul. Most recently, she leant her voice to the legendary Mr. Scruff for

This Soul Man is the Real Deal

Sam Moore, lead singer of legendary R&B duo Sam & Dave, was inducted last night into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in Youngstown, Ohio along with Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Journey, The Righteous Bros., Bread, The Pointer Sisters, Sly and The Family Stone and other legendary musical groups. Ironically, Moore believes parts of his life story, as well as his trademark and music, are being ripped off this weekend by the new movie “Soul Men” starring Samuel L., Jackson and the late Bernie Mac.

November 12th ought to be a national holiday

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on this date in 1815. Today is also the birthday … of Wallace Shawn. The actor-playwright is 65. Inconceivable! He’s the son of the former New Yorker editor William Shawn, and he’s become well known as a character actor in Hollywood movies such as The Princess Bride (1987) and Clueless (1995). Most people don’t know that he’s also an avant-garde playwright. When he got out of college, a lot of his friends took jobs writing for his father’s magazine, but Shawn

MOTOWN, MICHAEL & MOS DEF

So the saying goes, “They didn’t want to give us 50 Acres and A mule so we’ll take 50 states and a White House…..And yes Chuck D, we can now paint the White House BLACK! BARACK OBAMA….Our new overseer. Now that we’ve conquered one hurdle, and made history while doing it, believe there are more roadblocks to come. Pray for the safety of him & his family. Be patient as he has a lot of damage control to handle. There is a big mess to clean up and we all have to hold hands in support, prayer and “
