The 31st Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival and MusicFest was awesome, as usual. We saw some new things this year, like Trillium’s new tube guitar amps. The design and cabinetry caught my eye, and their great tone caught my ears, so I stopped to chat. Scott told me this is Trillium’s [...]
It’s time for the Guitar Show! I always find something new to see or hear. A friend went yesterday and said to check out the Stevie Ray Vaughan museum in the back. It’s small but they have some genuine articles there, so it’s worth the trip. [...]
2007 was an amazing year for classic rock! We flashed back to the Summer of Love in 1967 and celebrated musical milestones like the Monterey Pop Festival. We saw some of our favorite groups reunite for a world tour, like Genesis and Van Halen. And [...]

I Can’t Get No Satisfaction November 19th, 2008 by Dank the Underdog It seems that ever since Rock Band 2 came out I haven’t been able to walk away. With all the fresh content coming every Tuesday, for Xbox 360 players, it looks like there’s no end in sight. This week saw the release of the iconic punk band The Dead Kennedys with songs “California Uber Alles”, “Holiday in Cambodia”, and “Police Truck”. Harmonix has already announced that the following albums will be avalible soon; Jane’s Ad
I meant to post this back in July; better late than never. Paste Magazine did an excellent job compiling a list of the coolest record stores in the US. Amoeba Records is hands down the best record store in the world. The magazine choose the Hollywood location, but the San Francisco and Berkley stores are just as good. The staff can be bit snobby, but they know their stuff. I’ve spent countless hours in both locations. In San Francisco you walk out on Haight Street and in Los Angeles you walk
Here’s the cover art for one of my latest mixes - a four disc box-set called Guitar Gods. A compilation like this invites furrowed brows, lists of corrections, and plenty of harrumphing from all corners. Strike up the chorus: “But what about ____________?” There were dozens more guitarists that ideally would have been included, but four discs seemed like enough, and the line had to be drawn somewhere. World B. Furr (sometime commenter on this blog) was kind enough to collaborate on this mix wit
"Texas Flood" is an electric blues album, released in 1983, by guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band Double Trouble.Although the song "Texas Flood" has three verses of lyrics, it is more of a prolonged guitar solo, allowing Vaughan to show off his characteristic electric blues style. During live shows, he would often play portions of this song behind his back, arousing an enthusiastic crowd response.Stylistically, "Texas Flood" is structured around the common three chord blues progression. When I saw the cover of “A Tribute To Stevie Wonder“ by Vernon Neilly I was a little worried but then I noticed a couple of the guitarists who join Vernon on this album, Greg Howe and Kiko Loureiro and suddenly it piqued my interest! The opening track, an instrumental version of ‘Boogie on Reggae Woman‘ features the amazing Greg Howe, and from the moment he starts playing you can tell instantly that its him from his middly sounding guitar to his incredible phrasing and that slidey vibrato! Back in 2005, when the hubby and I were deciding where in Texas we would settle, the music of the Lone Star State was a major consideration. Music has always been a big part of our lives, both well before we knew each other and especially since we've been a couple. When we were young and living in Lubbock, we were fortunate enough to see the early Flatlanders. We've been big fans of Joe, Butch and Jimmie Dale ever since. Being a college town, the Hub City was a regular stop for touring artists

By JOHN BENSON Special to The Gazette During his years spent teaching math at Medina High School, Charlie Bell always dreamed of taking his soul music singing hobby to a new level. Surprisingly, the Georgia native found his opportunity a few years ago while overseas as part of the Fulbright teacher exchange program. “While I was teaching in Finland, I met this band,” said Bell, calling from his home in Newport News, Va. “They came to something I was singing at church. A friend that knew me c

Faking the Band 2 is a weekly feature detailing the latest in DLC for Rock Band 2 and GH World Tour. Three down, three to go, gamers. Today’s Rock Band 2 DLC offering, the Foo Fighters’ sophomore record The Colour and the Shape, marks the halfway point in the parade of full albums promised back in September. Only Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jane’s Addiction and No Doubt remain, though the content train certainly shows no sign of stopping. Who’s driving this wonderful little locomotive? They must be

November 11, 2008 Music Lyric Monday I’ve been wanting to write about music ever since I started this blog but whenever I sat down to do so I found myself overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin. Did I blog about music, such a general term all by itself, by focusing on one artist at a time? One genre? One album? Did I write about the music that makes me believe I’m a misplaced southerner, or the music that takes me back to high school or college? There is too, of course, the fear that y’all w
Rickie Lee Jones Just the mention Rickie Lee Jones, born born November 8, 1954, in Chicago, takes me back a way, remembering her as far back as the time she cracked the music scene in 1977. We simply fell in love with her voice and songs. She always seemed to have the best musicians in her bands. I can’t list all of the who’s who of musicians that backed her in her first albums, it is really mind blowing, Buzz Feiten played the guitar for her in several albums if that is an indicator. Randy Ne
Music & Nature can well be a path to peace. Mt. Bonnell is the highest point in Austin, Texas and has been a tourist attraction dating back to the 1850’s. This was on my list of to do’s while I was in Austin, knowing that it was a hippie hang-out and one of Stevie’s favorite [...]
