Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 DVD Review

I finally got all the way through this double DVD set from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. This massive one day concert took place in Chicago last July, which is the second get together of these guitar legends. This follows slowhand’s first guitar festival, which stretched over a three day weekend [...]

Other Side of the Tracks 11/19/2008: Susan Tedeschi Back To The River Review

Susan Tedeschi – Back To The River Genre – Blues Label – Verve Quick Take: River of filler Get it if: Your mom wants a blues album for Christmas. Don’t get it if: You can’t take happy blues. Sometime in 1998, I just happened to wander into Manny’s Car Wash (R.I.P.) on the upper east side of NYC. There I heard the most blistering female blues voice this side of Bonnie Raitt. Seeing Susan Tedeschi that night made me an instant fan and soon she became the next big up and coming blues star.

Carolyn Wonderland - Killer Blues Guitar Woman!!!

Performing Judgement Day Blues in Portland, Oregon (turn it up!) Having just discovered Carolyn Wonderland, it didn't take long to feel like the last person to do so. She's pretty much an Austin, Texas institution-- Austin even has an official Carolyn Wonderland Day (Feb 28); decreed by the mayor. Austin never ceases to amaze me! I just caught Wonderland on Austin City Limits last weekend, and was blown away! Susan Tedeschi fans need to check out Carolyn Wonderland. This lady plays a few dif

Susan Tedeschi: “Back to the River”

By titling her new album Back to the River, Susan Tedeschi hints at some sort of retreat, a back to basics approach that her record label gleefully plays up by placing a sticker on the front cover that heralds the album as a “return to her signature sound.” And it’s a fair enough statement, on one level– the album has more in common with her older recordings than with the one that can directly before it, 2005’s Hope and Desire– but it also sells the artist a bit short, downplaying just how muc

Tal Wilkenfeld: Bass Guitar Prodigy

I used to get a little down around this time of season. Spring and summer were definitely my favorite seasons, and when it came time to turn the clocks back for the fall and winter, a wave of melancholy would set it in for a little while… For many reasons, most involving good health and over all better life style, I don’t feel that way anymore. The cooler darker months that lay ahead don’t have that same dismal effect on me. I look forward to coming home and spending time with my family. And

Friday Night Blues and Beer #133

The Beer: Say hello to an organic hefeweizen from Brauerei Pinkus Mueller in Munich, Germany. She pours a murky urine colored yellow with a thick soapy white head that descends with a slow gasp of relief to a moderate lace. She smells sweet and lemony with just a touch of banana. Wheat and grains intermingling with pear-like malts caress the tongue begging you to have another swallow. Crisp and clean with a medium body she does the job. Contains 5.10% alcohol and ran around $3.50 for a 500 ml b
