The South By SouthWest Music Conference is over, but there’s A LOT of commentary and comments about it. More than I could say here, except for the fact that what I’ve read is all over the map. But hey c’mon, we’re talking a long weekend with 1,700 artists and bands. Dude, [...]
Man, it’s almost impossible to keep up with almost 1,700 artists and bands during the huge South By SouthWest music conference going on in Austin this weekend. But I found a pretty cool website that attempts to do just that.
It’s called imeem’s ultimate guide to SXSW, at sxsw.imeem.com. Check out their day by [...]

A story from last years’ SXSW: I saw Yeasayer three, maybe four times in Austin last go-around, and each time the lead singer certainly impressed with his oddness (weird face slaps, and twitchy head knicks) but his performance in the big park in the middle of the city was quite easily the weirdest moment I’ve seen from a live performer. As the band continued to play, the lead singer, Chris Keating, just, well, ran off the stage, and not like he ran in to the back area and pounded a beer, no
Y’all, we’ve got so many projects going on that my head is literally spinning off its axis with excitement. Oh, there are cupcakes. And there are conferences. Many, many fun conferences. Conferences You’ll See Me at in Q1 2009 January is Chicks Who Click and it’s going to be so. much. fun. Underline on the word fun. Yesterday, talking with Denise (who is amazingly masterminding the sponsors, swag and speakers like an event baker, mixing the right ingredients to perfection) and Barbara (who
O’Death, NYC’s premiere Gothic Country Punks will be taking the stage at Mohawk next Wednesday, November 26th. Austin Sound Check caught up with lead vocalist/guitarist Greg Jamie for an exclusive interview. Continue reading after the jump for the full interview, including Greg’s thoughts on Austin and SXSW, as well the changing music industry and where the band was when Barack Obama was elected president. Tomorrow night ushers in another installment of MoMA/IFP/Filmmaker Magazine’s annual “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You” series (last year’s winner was Ronald Bronstein’s incredible Frownland). For the third year in a row, all five nominees will get two screenings at MoMA before the winner is announced at the Gotham Awards on December 2nd. This is quickly becoming a holy grail of sorts for filmmakers who are nearing the end of their festival runs and are confronting the rather harsh r

The World United Music Fest, which called in Jack Kevorkian as a roadie at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, is quite possibly the biggest musical festival disaster of all time where nobody was killed. If the WUMF hired Hell’s Angels for security… well, at least the bands would have lathered up bikers to play for. What if they put on a festival and nobody came? The nightmare of every promoter, every entertainment gambler came true on 500 fenced-in acres behind the San Marcos outlet malls on Friday an

Noah Baumback, director of Kicking and Screaming and The Squid and the Whale, helmed an SNL Digital Short, which aired over the weekend. “Clearing The Air” stars Paul Rudd, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen. Unfortunately, NBC didn’t decide the short worthy of online upload, so we’re stuck with this bad video taped YouTube copy. Wow, this girl can SING! That’s all I could think watching Adele from master control.. This is the British singing sensation’s second appearance on MBE – her first was right after SXSW in March of this year. The difference was notable in her confidence and vocal strength. Even though the songs were the same, it was like watching a different person. Her album, “19,” got massive airplay across all our music shows, especially “Cold Shoulder” (my personal fave), “Hometown Glory,” and “Chasing Pavem
Applications for the next Digital Missio are now open. Judging by everything I’ve heard the last one was a success - so I imagine this one will be too. It is described on their website thus: The Digital Mission to South by South West interactive (13-17 March 2009) is a trade mission for 40 of the UK’s hottest digital SME’s to participate in one of the world’s most vibrant digital conference and festivals; SXSW Interactive - where technology, design and business innovators mingle over hundr

Twitter's famous Fail Whale has been joined by two new characters that emerge when the service goes down: a cartoon caterpillar and a chatty ice cream cone. The two characters (pictured, right) showed up Tuesday during Twitter maintenance, leading users to concoct names for the new characters. Some early ideas: For the caterpillar, Twitterpillar and Fail Worm. For the ice cream cone: Moan Cone, Groan Cone and Cone of Silence. Those last two came from Nedra Weinreich, who quickly hit up
Inimitably talented indie rocker and one-man-symphony Andrew Bird rarely ventures this far south of Illinois, so we were thrilled to find out that he'll be playing a show at the Paramount Theatre next February—and, coincidentally, on the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birthday. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at noon, starting at $31 including service charges. Loney Dear, who played our second annual SXSW day party, will open. [Andrew Bird Shows] [Gettix Link]
We’re always in the mood for a good interview, and from the looks of it, Nicholas Comney snagged one. Recently, he had the chance to sit down with Jonny Bell, lead singer and bassist for the up-and-coming indie act, Crystal Antlers. If you haven’t heard, you’re definitely missing out. With a hot EP creating all the buzz, this Long Beach quintet is a must see on the live circuit and a must have at the record store. Let’s see what all the fuss is about… Consequence of Sound (CoS): I want to st
Riverboat Gamblers Bonnie 'Prince' Billy has already completed the follow up to this year's Lie Down in the Light. It's called Beware!, and Drag City will release it on March 17, 2009. Uncharacteristically, Oldham will tour in support of it, "simultaneous with the record release, even in major markets." Yes, this means he'll be here during SXSW. Shearwater performed a Tiny Desk Concert with NPR's Bob Boilen last time they were in D.C. Texas Music Matters @ KUT has video from Funx3 Fest, f
Lykke Li is a Swedish pop singer who we've grown fond of this year. We posted a few videos earlier this year and really like her debut album, Youth Novels. If you don't have it yet, buy it here. You can also check out her out performing "I'm Good, I'm Gone" on Black Cab Sessions. Lykke Li was here in Austin earlier this March, playing a slew of SXSW parties. She finally makes her return next year in February. The show will be at Antone's on February 19th. Tickets are $20 and you better buy them
Situationists is an energized band out of Sheffield, UK that has just released their Onward and Upward EP through Tough Love Records. Their brand of angular pop punk rock could easily be sidled up against band like Bloc Party and they wouldn’t be frowned upon. Their music is frenetic and kinetic. The perfect pick me up for an unassuming Tuesday afternoon. mp3: Situationists - Onwards and Upwards And now something completely different: The Run Down - Thursday February 28, 2008 (2) The Run D
You probably have heard me rant and rave about the Gaslight Anthem by now, and if you've taken the time to listen, you'll know my ranting is not unwarranted. I'm always on the lookout for great new bands, and when I read a press release stating that the Riverboat Gamblers are up the same street, I definitely was interested. And I must say, from first listen, they don't disappoint. It'll be interesting to hear if their new album, Underneath the Owl, released on March 10th, 2009, will live up t
