Richard Wright 1943 - 2008

Pink Floyd fans around the world are mourning the passing of Richard Wright, who died of cancer today at age 65. Wright was a founding member of Pink Floyd and a contributing writer to many of the group’s memorable tracks, such as “Us And Them” and “The Great Gig In The Sky,” from ‘Dark [...]

Pink Floyd DVD Welcome to the Machine

“Welcome to the Machine” Pink Floyd
This Double-Disc DVD from Classic Rock Legends was just released May 13th. Somehow I overlooked it last week, but I have to mention this because Pink Floyd is one of my favorite psychedelic bands from the sixties. They are a true classic rock [...]

You Am I @ ANU Bar

2008-11-16 You Am I are one of my favourite live acts. They always do a great show and never disappoint. I've seen them at least 5 times (and then there's all the times I've seen Tim Rogers play....)For some reason I hadn't seen them in more than a year. Every time they toured I wasn't able to make it. Luckily, they decided to play the ANU Bar on Thursday night and in contrast to the show last week, it was packed out.Opening with 'Damage', they played a set that was dominated by songs from Con

Mystery Drain

Right now, I'm reading Francine Prose's Goldengrove, with this wonderful passage toward the beginning of the book: "Nico... with her chalky, disappointed voice. It was strange how she sounded... hollow and checked out, and with a foreign accent that made it seem she was learning the words as she sang them." Aside from reminding me how much I love stumbling upon pop-music asides in the middle of a non-music-themed novel, it also got me thinking about mystery and the mysterious. Nico is a perf

David Ackles - David Ackles (1968) Ackles' self-titled debut LP introduced a singer/songwriter quirky even by the standards of Elektra records, possibly the most adventurous independent label of the 1960s. Ackles was a pretty anomalous artist of his time, with a low, grumbling voice that was uncommercial but expressive, and similar to Randy Newman's. As a composer, Ackles bore some similarities to Newman, as well in his downbeat eccentricity and mixture of elements from pop, fo

Cover Me: Arnold Layne

Cover Me: Arnold Layne David Kilpatrick covers Arnold Layne. Free scary look included. Syd Barrett's Cambridge suburban folktale from the 1967 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' album (which I bought, in 1967, and still have) rendered unlistenable with the aid of my office iMac and jazz-nylon Lowden. This is the party piece I sometimes play at our folk club to silence kids who ask for some Pink Floyd, expecting the obvious stuff and often having no idea about the REAL Floyd material... » en.wikip

Weekend Musical Break: Pink Floyd

No posts this weekend, so this one is going up early. Pink Floyd is a hard band to sum in in three paragraphs. One can make the case that three very different bands have performed under that name: the original band led by Syd Barrett, the later Roger Waters-led effort that produced the band’s most memorable albums, and the post-Waters David Gilmour Pink Floyd which stayed Prog to a great extent but which had a wholly different sound. One funny thing is that pretty much nobody has ever managed t

Tickley Feather (2008)

TickleyTickley Feather is Annie Sachs. She grew up in rural Virginia but has been living in Philadelphia for 5 years now. She has been using her time learning to write and record her own music as part of her nights spent at home, adapting to being the single mother of a young child. Sachs is a four tracking hobbyist who's musical spirit dwells in the realm of her own natural inclinations. She is a firm believer in doing what feels right, and in her recordings she really uses her solo status to g

Roky Erickson was the songwirter and front man of the 13th Floor Elevators. In many ways Erickson was Syd Barrets equal. Unlike Barrett Erickson remained a relatively obscure person. Maybe it is because Erickson survived the dope. But he went nuts. His solo work is uneven but contains classics. Here are two of his best solo albums: Gremlims Have Pictures and All The May Do My Rhyme. The first contains a version of Lou Reeds' Heroin that makes the Velvet Underground version sound like a bubblegu

Lemon Shuffle - A Year Older, None the Wiser Edition

I have a slight hangover from yesterday's bash. What fun! And thanks again to everyone who came to party with us. Crazy love to my hetero life partner, McLovin, without whom, the world would be a little less colorful. Thank the lord Cheeses none of my techno electronica or metal made the list today. It's downright quiet on the shuffle today... dare I say slightly sexy? Hope you enjoy and as always, if you hear a song or artist you like, explore, check them out and PURCHASE their music. Musici

Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd got a lot of credits in the early years of Pink Floyds existing. But Barrett left (or was forced to leave due to his drugs addiction). But his old band mates never let him down that much. Both solo albums contain contributions of several Pink Floyd (and Soft Machine) members. Anyone who loves Nick Drake, John Martyn (his early folk work), Roky Erickson or Roy Harper will love the two amazing solo albums. Both come in extended versions with a lot of extra t

FIGHT LIKE APES - JAKE SUMMERS

‘Jake Summers’ is a single from the album Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion, though there is no mention of any medallions, gold or otherwise, nor of primates engaging in combat of any description. Fight Like Apes hale from Dublin, forming in 2006 and have already receiving radio play from Zane Lowe, Marc Riley and Jonathan Ross (until he got suspended for the BBC for leaving nasty messages on old people’s answer phones with the over groomed, grovelling, perverted peacock c

Slowdive - 1991 - Holding Our Breath

Quality: 5 out of 5 Trip-O-Meter: 5 out of 5 Although only an EP, Holding Our Breath stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Slowdive's masterful album, Souvlaki. I find Slowdive's music to be a narcotic, and this disc is truly addictive. I think it's a prime example for anyone trying to validate the shoegazer trend in the early 1990's. In fact, I'd play this for some one before the Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Kicking of the EP is one of my favorite songs, "Catch The Breeze." The song is basically

The Legendary Pink Dots - Plutonium Blonde [2008]

The Legendary Pink Dots formed in August 1980 in London. In 1984 the band transplanted itself to Amsterdam which led to a shift in the original lineup, the original bassist Roland Callaway leaving at this time. The core members of the group are vocalist/songwriter/keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist Phil Knight. Many others have passed through the group over the years. As of 2007 the group is comprised of: * Edward Ka-Spel - vocals, keyboards, songwriter * Phil Knight (a.k.a. The Silve

Long lost psych legends found!

If you've ever heard '666 Akross' by Crypto and The Cross Word, chances are, you'll still be reeling from the vicious fuzz guitar and primal howl of Peter Biddlecombe, or as he was know back in '67, Lord Crypt. For many years, people have been trying to track down Biddlecombe to quiz him about his time in the most hotly talked about psych combo in the country. A snippet from the International Times said "In Lord Crypt, Crypto and the Cross Word have the most enigmated frontman since Sinatra, m

Pink Floyd Goes Polka

Pink Floyd Goes PolkaEvery city has them: hardworking musicians who find that their only sure route to a paycheck is to interpret the music of bands more famous than themselves. There are countless Beatles cover bands, of course, and plenty more devoted to the music of the Ramones, U2 and AC/DC, to name a handful. Few, however, mess with the original sound quite as much as a certain Pink Floyd tribute band based in Toledo, Ohio. They're called Polka Floyd. Not surprisingly, the group started
