B.B. King has released a new album of old covers. Blues covers from his early influences. The CD is produced by the man with the midas touch, T Bone Burnett. The album revisits the music of the 1950’s, early in B.B.’s professional career, and recreates that vintage 50’s sound by reproducing the [...]

The 50 years of McCabe’s Guitar Shop will be celebrated with a three-hour special on KCRW airing from 9 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving Day. The guitar shop was founded 50 years ago and its back room has, over the last 30-plus years, become one of L.A.'s most treasured concert venues. I consider it key to my musical education. Program was inspired by the McCabe's 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert held at UCLA’s Royce Hall in October. Show will be hosted by current concert director Lincoln Myerson

The Lone Star Independent Film Festival wrapped up last night with a screening of the just-about-finished Teen-A-Go-Go, a documentary about Fort Worth’s teen rock scene in the 1960s directed by Melissa Kirkendall. “You could make this movie about Fort Worth or Omaha or any other town that had a teen scene in the 1960s,” she said. “But I think Fort Worth is a little different because of some of the people that came out of this scene, like T-Bone Burnett or Red Young or Jerry Lynn Williams
Sam Phillips - or “the artist formerly known as Leslie Phillips” - recorded as a Christian music artist until recording The Turning with the producer T-Bone Burnett. In 1988 she left Christian music behind, signed with Virgin, and adopted the moniker “Sam Phillips.” The first Sam Phillips album The Indescribable Wow deals with expected subject matter for a first outing: love, loss, and a bit of abstract dream imagery sprinkled about. The retro sound recalls the fifties and sixties, more speci

Here are two more cd's of Roky Erickson. Further here is The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators with Roky Erickson on the wheel. This album is where Erickson made history. Recorded in 1965-1866 this is one of the first and finest recordings of psychedelic rock. The album contains classics as You're gonna miss me (2 versions), Fire Engine and Reveberation. This edition is further interesting for the covers the band did: the Kinks' You really got me, Them's Gloria(!), Roll over Beethov

I picked up this unique duet album the other day, Raising Sand with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The album was produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett. Any preconceptions I might have had regarding Plant’s ability to perform “roots music” was blown away after my first listen to this CD. Check out this video of “Please Read The Letter” and judge for yourself:
By Anthony Mark Happel It’s notable that Fred Eaglesmith chose to name his own label A Major Label, as an ironic play on words, because on one hand, his music sounds completely un-commercial, while on the other hand, his presentation could be, in a different world, courted by major labels as the next (ironic) Tom Waits. His songs are not in exactly the same vein as Waits. His own weird blend of non-gospel gospel and non-roots roots music is straight up cool enough by itself without ripping
My blogging friend Choralgirl came up with a really cool meme. To quote her, "If I could choose ten hymns that together have truly shaped me, that speak to me, that comprise my theology, what would they be? It's really a tough exercise for me, because there are so many wonderful candidates in the history of Christian music. But I think I have a fair representation here of texts and tunes that will always live in me, and the reasons for each."She emailed and asked if I would be interested in doin
Why the dutch oven? Because the term 'hot stove' needs to be retired. This feature will attempt to give you a listicle-driven source for all sorts of off-season baseball rumors. If you have any suggestions, rumors, or recipes that I can cook in my dutch oven, email us Orioles Targeting Un-Tejada-like Shortstop in Trade Market: Jack Wilson, Khalil Greene, and J.J. Hardy are among the mediocre shortstops sought by Balty-more G.M. Andy MacPhail. Other wishlist items for Andy: starting pitching,
Boney fingers. (Hoyt Axton) I first heard this song on a Carol Burnett special. This one, on the other hand, is straight off of VHS from 1983, mustache, leisure suit and all.
snippet of Sahara at ACL 2007 Fresh off the massive success of “Raising Sand” by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, producer T-Bone Burnett is working with 20-year-old Austin native Sahara Smith. The singer, a runnerup on a “Prairie Home Companion” talent contest as a 15-year-old, has been to Burnett’s Santa Monica studio twice in recent weeks. There is currently not a label attached to the project. Ms. Smith plays Threadgill’s South tomorrow (Thursday), opening for Shawn Sahm and the Tex Me
The Cowboys injuries continue mount up. TE Jason Witten (ribs) - X-rays were negative after Witten was taken to the locker room in the second quarter. He said he tried to doctor the ribs up at halftime, but didn't have a return in him. Officially the injury was called a rib contusion. He will be reevaluated Monday. CB Anthony Henry (quadriceps) - Henry left the game early in the third quarter with a quadriceps contusion. He did not return and was replaced by Orlando Scandrick, with Alan Ba
Above: Buddy Miller. Photo by Anthony Pepitone/ buddyandjulie.com Out and in stores tomorrow are records from three singer-songwriters who take on country and roots music from three very different perspectives. Here’s a look at all three. Buddy Miller: He’s a guy other performers like to be next to on stage or with in the studio. For starters, he’s a touring guitarist/vocalist behind Alison Krauss and Robert Plant (and alongside T-Bone Burnett). He has also hit the road a few times with Emm
There's something fascinating about cover versions, the way they are familiar yet off-putting, the way they rearrange the furniture in your musical mind. (Look I could get all Freudian on your ass about this, and what would Sigmund say about my phrasing there anyway, but I'm not that kind of guy. Still, you might want to go read this essay.) That shifting can be a pleasant surprise--"oh, you now have such a great view out the window!"--or a disaster magnet--"damn, who moved the couch right where
It's been a while since I've done one of these pieces. Part of the problem – or my lack of motivation, I'm not sure which – was that there wasn't much that I considered new and exciting. The PTC files an Amicus Brief on a case even as they criticize others for filing an Amicus Brief that they disagree with? Yawn. The PTC takes credit for something that they had little – no I take that back, nothing – to do with. Same old same old. The PTC gives out one of its awards to a company that it likes an
Thanks for the great feedback on the last post. Like I said, this isn't a political blog, but I'm struck by how similar this election is to television. It continued with the last debate. Because if I were casting for President, I wouldn't even bring McCain to network. It's a bit funny, because the republicans always felt that they had figured out the likability factor with Reagan and Bush. That's the whole Palin appeal, too. You want to hang out with her. She's congenial. Fun. Warm. A regular ga

The Cowboys injuries mount. Butterfingrs Romo is talking about playing this week but he has had problems with interceptions and fumbling before he hurt his finger. Time to take a week off. I'm sure the swelling hasn't even gone down yet. Time for Brad Johnson to earn his pay. INJURY REPORT QB Tony Romo (finger) - Although Romo was limited in Thursday's practice, head coach Wade Phillips said he did throw the ball "pretty well" with a fractured right pinkie finger and still has a chance t
