I’ve been using YouTube alot lately, just to see how much more I can do with it. It’s amazing the archive footage available that would delight any classic rock fan.
There is a very cool channel called Ultracoolsixties, that has more than 400 classic rock videos from the sixties, with everything from The Bar-Kays [...]

I guess I'm showing my age, but I REALLY love some of the old Stax music. Just about anything by Otis Redding. Then too there was Eddie Floyd, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, etc. (Though I never cared much for Booker T. & the MGs or The Bar-Kays; instrumentals were never my thing.) BTW, it was Otis Redding who really got things going at the Monterey Pop Festival back in '67. Many will point to Jimi Hendrix (whose appearance WAS a watershed moment). But it was actually Otis who turned things
Pictured at Memphis' Stax Museum are curator Carol Drake and Ardent Studios' founder John Fry. I picked up this feature from Broadcast Newsroom:John Fry, founder of Memphis renowned Ardent Studios, has donated the historic recording console which was used for many years in his studios, often shaping the sound of countless Stax Records hits during a period when Ardent worked closely with the Stax label and recording studios. The console was made by Memphis company Auditronics, owned by Welton Jet
Are female rappers an endangered species? Memphis Music Confidential November 10th, 2008 Last week, in the online news journal Slate, writer Jonah Weiner wondered “Where did all the female rappers go?” He cited Queen Latifah and Lil’ Kim, Da Brat and Missy Elliott, and the pioneer Sha Rock, who was a 10th grader in the Bronx when she co-founded Funky 4 + 1 in 1978. The sassy Salt-N-Pepa got their due, as well as the real Roxanne, MC Lyte, M.I.A., Kid Sister and Foxy Brown. Weiner even wen
Inspired by all the funky jams on the Chimney today, here's a nice posi-style synth funk jam courtesy of The Bar-Kays. Really more of a Friday night jam, but hey, I was working all day today so why not? Work It Out

Well, here we are on Monday yet again… and as I woke up I took a few moments to look over my music collection to see what I felt like doing tonight. While scanning through my collection, I stumbled upon a playlist I had that was made up of motown / soul. I threw the idea of leaning towards soul tonight to a few people and got back strong approvals. So, here’s a sample of what you’re going to hear tonight during Service @ The Graveyard Tavern. Service || Mondays || The Graveyard Tavern || 10pm
I think for Halloween I'm going as one of the guys from the Bar-Kays. Not the early 70's funk years, but the post disco, strung out 80s leather K's. They lived the word freak, which this song spells out with a guttural uh! Bar-Kays - Freaky Behaviour and not a group to shy away from repetition, another "freaky" hit from the BK's. Can I go to this party please?!!?!

By: David Schultz Okkervil River’s Will Sheff isn’t impressed with perfection. Much like Wes Anderson’s cinematic explorations of the flawed beauty of the insecure personality, the Austin-based singer-songwriter writes literate songs from the point of view of the distinctly non-Alpha male (and female) as well as those with a distinctly “Positively 4th Street” edge to them. Singing in an imperfect voice, Sheff doesn’t hide much when he’s on stage. Wearing his emotions on the sleeve of his nat

Sorry for the quite preposterous lack of updates lately - I have been moving house. That, coupled with BT’s absolute ineptness has meant limited Internet abilities lately, and I only work on the site from my lovely home unlike some other bloggers I know who thieve work connection. You know who you are. All back to normal now anyway, so expect loads of good new content coming up. Thought I would kick off with my latest edit: The Bar Kays - She Talks To Me With Her Body from the grand old year

This blues bandleader, who sings and plays guitar and calls his music "bluez," began releasing his own compact discs in 2001. When Billy Jones substituted a "z" for an "s," he was not trying to make the name of his beloved genre closer to the way a drunken bar patron might pronounce it at the end of the night. Rather, "bluez" is all about being independent from the big-time music business, a stance more often taken by indie rockers. While in reality even the biggest blues labels are nothing but
Here is some Bar-Kays stuff. I hope u'll enjoy it.
Funk pioneers the Bar-Kays not only succeeded in stamping their own rock influence on the genre, but also influenced a generation of vocalists while keeping their own sense of sound intact. By the '80s, however, the band had traded in some of their traditional chops for a more electronic vibe, one which certainly gave nod to the younger generation of funkers coming up right behind them, Prince and Cameo's Larry Blackmon especially. This move to a wave groove is particularly evident on Propositio
The Bar-Kays were an aggregate born of the same inspiration behind Booker T. & the MG's. The original lineup of James Alexander (bass), Jimmy King (guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (organ), Phalon Jones (sax), Carl Cunningham (drums), and Ben Cauley (trumpet) were only together long enough to have issued this album prior to the tragic loss of everyone sans Alexander and Cauley in the December '67 plane crash that also claimed the life of Otis Redding. Soul Finger (1967) commences with the title track, w
