Joe SatrianiMountain (Featuring Leslie West and Corky Laing)The Kiva AuditoriumAlbuquerque, New MexicoNovember 8, 2008Concert Review by NightwatcherIf the era of the guitar hero is past, someone forgot to tell Leslie West and Joe Satriani as they rocked the near capacity house at the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Featuring more tone, notes and musical talent than one stage should probably hold, this show was a guitarist's wet dream.First up were heavy rock legends Mountain, whom, a

On my iGoogle home page, I keep a gadget with obituaries from the New York Times. Today was a rare day that I recognized all three names. Mitch Mitchell, one of the great rock and roll drummers, died at age 62. Mitchell was best known as the drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. His drumming style was heavily influenced by jazz musicians, and was lighter - swingier - than most drummers in a power trio. Mr. Mitchell did not expect much from the job. "I'll give it a crack," he later remembered
Reactivated New Jersey metallers WHIPLASH have uploaded a pre-production/demo version of another new song, “Madman At The Helm”, to their MySpace page. The band will enter the studio in early March to begin recording its sixth album, “Unborn Again”, with guitarist/vocalist Tony Portaro handling the production duties. Co-producing the effort will be Harris Johns, who has previously worked with CORONER, HELLOWEEN, KREATOR, SEPULTURA, SODOM and VOIVOD, among many others. The band will also docum
By Pete Donahue If your a huge fan of The Strokes like me, then you have probably already heard about drummer Fabrizio Moretti’s side project, Little Joy. But if you haven’t heard this new band yet, please pay attention. You just might like what you’ll hear (or love it!) The trio, rounded out by Rodrigo Amarante (former singer and guitarist of Brazilian rockers Los Hermanos) and Moretti’s girlfriend, Binki Shapiro, recruited producer Noah Gerogeson (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Mason Je

David Byrne has this clip on his website of Glenn Schwartz playing at Hooples in Cleveland, Ohio. From the website: "Glenn started the James Gang in the 60s, then moved to California and was in the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. He flipped out soon afterward and was in religious communities. He's had a rough life and is tortured and crazy. Now Glenn is 67 years old and plays in a blues trio for free late every Thursday at a small bar called Major Hooples. , and Dan Vonnegut. When she returned to the East Coast ten years later, she continued to immerse herself in study, taking voice lessons and playing open mikes. Caught somewhere between Jo Dee Messina and the Indigo Girls, the strength of her voice and the mellow sounds of the album as a whole will lull the listener to another place, another time. The dark sounds of some of the songs will put you in the middle of an empty street in the middle of the night. At other times lyrics like “my best fr

This indie folk track features gorgeous, soothing vocals from Loren Radis, lead singer and songwriter of Each Passing Day. This track is taken from their debut album, “Welcome Home”. I found Loren Radis on thesixtyone.com and was blown away with his warm and lush vocals and great covers he has posted there. Head on over to the bands website where there just released a new FREE download this week, “Skin“. Each Passing Day - Barefoot last.fm bio: Each Passing Day was formed while it’s me
The Lucksmiths have never released a record that was less than lovely. Since 1993 the Australian trio (now quartet) has been crafting thoughtful indie pop that warms both ears and hearts in equal measure. Filled with some of their best songs and most fully realized arrangements, 2005’s Warmer Corners marked a high point in the band’s career that would seem like a hard act to follow. Luckily, the band is up for the challenge on 2008’s First Frost, and if it falls a little short of Warmer Corners
A year and a bit ago we Covermounted C97, a collection of the songs time seems to have overlooked from what was then ten years ago. So popular did it prove that in haste we shoved out C98 a year ago, and so it follows that we should complete the decade set before this year is out, again using no artist that was on either of the previous sets. In the wider world 1999 was the year of Britney and Christina, of Westlife's reign of terror commencing, of trance and two-step, of Eminem's ascension to i

Here are some more bands whose live shows were among the highlights of this year's CMJ Music Marathon. The Bronx: This confusingly named L.A. band is hardly new, having played a major stage on the length of this past summer’s Warped Tour. Half Hour to Go were a northern New Jersey trio that hashed out a few recordings in the mid-90s, but given their propensity to sound uncannily like Archers of Loaf and Polvo they might as well have transplanted themselves to North Carolina. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but HHtG’s wirey inspirations were fairly obvious to indie-guitar rawk connoisseurs. Even upon initial examination of Items For the Full Outfit, and it’s preceding single, Don’t Forget the Children, these guys ooze from e
Los Angeles, California - There has been a heaviness in contemporary pop music — a weariness and general unhappiness in all but the most saccharine stuff. Let’s face it — the indie scene is slandered with the term emo quite often, and it’s not without cause. But fret not! All is not doom and gloom (and self-indulgent moping)! In a world where all is anguish and misunderstanding, there stands a beacon of joy and pretense-less mirth: Jukebox the Ghost. A little trio out of DC, Jukebox the Ghost
