It’s funny how long it takes to discover something really unique. The Rosary Tapes for example. Created in the early nineties on cassette tapes and later remastered onto CD, The Rosary Tapes are a collection of Roman Catholic prayers and meditations for the rosary, which are set to contemporary music. Alot of [...]
Ever the Student Teach me. Teach me! Let me never become so old That my ears are not pits. Teach me. Teach me! Let every man become my teacher, Let every sorrow speak deeply. Let every joy inscribe me. Teach me. Teach me! For if I stop listening, I shall stop forever! Yea, the writing of the ages Speaks eternity as ever Listening, ever waiting. Teach me. Teach me! Let me ne’er forget that I am a child; That tomorrow is a secret, A joyful secret, not yet imparted; That yesterday was a playthi
Today we did what every good Evangelical family does on a Saturday while visiting Toronto; we checked out the Catholic bookstore. If religious bookstores of any kind are places where you can purchase the essentials for worship and spiritual development, then I would say that Evangelicals and Catholics have very little in common if anything at all. I’m not saying that’s the case. I’m just saying if you had to judge by what’s in the bookstore, that’s what you’d conclude. This store, and the
Experts say about 13% of us have had at least one personality disorder at some time (Mattia & Zimmerman, 2001; see also Weissman, 1993). Wow, that’s more than 1 in every 10! But, I’m not too surprised because I’ve certainly run into my fair share— starting with my own family of origin. In fact, I became fascinated with the field of psychology, ever since I first learned such a marvelous area of study existed in high school, because I hoped it would finally help me unlock the mysteries

I think the holidays are hard on adoptees and their natural families. Many of us that have been searching for years have always wondered what happened to them. Its nice to see a good reunion story in the news. I am always happy for those that get to reunite any time of the year. It is more joyful and gives me hope when it is around Christmas time. It looks like this is an Indiana adoptee. Kudos to you my sister. Here is the link and the story. Sisters meet after lifetime of separation A Ha

For me the rosary is an allegory of hearing and responding to the message of Our Lord and living the Christian life, as exemplified by Our Lady. With the Joyful Mysteries, we accept and welcome Christ into our hearts. With the Mysteries of Light we hear and acknowledge his message. With the Sorrowful Mysteries we join Christ and take up our cross. And through His glory, we, like Mary, are raised to be with him.
First of all, let’s just get this out of the way: yes the article I am writing about today comes from AARP Magazine. Why am I reading AARP Magazine? Am I secretly over 50? Or is it that I will read anything that’s in front of my face and has words on it? Probably the latter. It would at least explain why I have memorized the strange poetry of the list of ingredients in my shampoo. Whatever the reason, I found myself reading an article in AARP Magazine by John Updike, The Writer in Winter. It i
I am leading a retreat this coming weekend at another parish in Tennessee. I have interiorly entitled the retreat, “Are We Not in Paradise?” The thoughts are on the immediacy of Christ and heaven - so wonderfully described in the passage quoted here from Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. It is a passage that is never far from my thoughts. This is a reprint from last June. During Holy Week, one of my favorite hymns in the Church is the Wise Thief (the Exapostelarion of Holy Friday). It recalls

As a young child I was taken, by family living in the west of Ireland, to Our Lady’s Shrine at Knock. It was there, having been presented with a rosary and the obligatory bottle of holy water, that I first came to some early appreciation of the enormous affection and reverence with which Our Lady is held and of the vital role she plays in our lives as followers of Christ. I knew there was something special about those beads and the prayers which accompanied them in that steady, comforting rhyth
While I am decidedly Protestant, I requested this book because I have a great interest in learning about and connecting with other Christian faith traditions. I'll try to share some thoughts on this book this week...but I'm frantically trying to finish another book at the moment. :) It is time to play a Wild Card! “Lucid Living holds a vision of an enchanted new world.” So begins the vision statement for Lucid Living, a company founded by Leza Danly. Some years back, I had heard a class offered by Leza in which she talked about emotions and authenticity. I bought one of her tapes, entitled, Loving Your Inner Child and Adolescent: The First Gateway to Spiritual Adulthood. This year, my own coach is in the midst of a year-long course offered by Lucid Living. Her own transformations have so inspired me th

.If you find yourself in dire need of help from God pray the following prayers with as much trust as you can muster. This trust, or childlike confidence, is of extreme importance. In a sense the more you trust God, the more you permit Him to help you.NOTE: All prayer is centered on Jesus Christ. Know with absolute certainty that all that we give to Mary, she takes to Jesus. With great trust pray:9 Memorares. “Remember, o most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to T
When I was growing up in the south of Ireland the rosary, as a form of private and communal prayer, was a part of everyday life. It was still common to see elderly people on buses or trains praying the rosary. In churches it was also common to see people praying the rosary on their own, or in groups. As a child I would have learned this prayer from my grandmother, for whom it was her main devotion. This was the way I first learned about the main events in Jesus' earthly life, from his birth to h
