Julian Laxton would later be brought in as the group’s lead guitarist. They released a handful of singles throughout 1967 and 1968, the best of these being blistering hard rock covers of Satisifaction and Mr. You’re a Better Man Than I. Bonzo and the Raging Moon (Part 1)

The date was September 24th, 1980. The place was The Old Hyde. He was picked up by the band's assistant, Rex King, that morning and was to be brought to the band's rehearsal at Bay Studios. It was a part of the band's preparation for an upcoming tour of the United States, the first US tour since 1977. At that time, he had just overcome a heroin problem. He was taking a drug to treat his anxiety and depression. While on the way to the studios, he asked King to stop for breakfast. Legend has it

Thick Context

Hooray for Dial M’s 200,000th hit! On my own side, I just FINISHED revising my book, Chopin’s Polish Ballade, for Oxford University Press. I still have to muck around a bit with the musical examples, printing it out etc. and send it to them, and the copyediting and proof phases lie ahead, but as far as the writing: DONE. Among the things I’ve had on hold because of various other tasks is this blog, now almost two months late. This year, for my birthday, Brother Joel sent me this retrospective

YWS Interview: Police Informer

When Ian first started our blog about a year and a half ago, I had no idea how big blogging actually was. I had been blogging on Live Journal, but thought blogging was just something that you did and your friends read. I didn't know about Perez Hilton, or any of these other websites or even that you could develop a following. I had never even heard of blogspot.com. I honestly thought we were breaking some sort of new ground. The first blog that I found besides ours was Police Informer when Pulv

Jeff Beck - Live At Crossroads Festival (Bootleg)

Jeff Beck - Live At Crossroads Festival (Bootleg) Two little words stand for the consummate rock guitarist: Jeff Beck. While Clapton was pursuing the blues in his post-Yardbirds, pre-Cream years, Beck was branching out and making the big noise(s) that came to define modern rock--feedback, distortion, wails, etc. While Clapton was mellowing out circa '73, Beck was exploring his own fiery take on jazz-rock fusion. This night, shortly before sunset, Beck performed a "summation" of his career--s

Paul, if I were writing a contemporary worship song, I certainly wouldn’t use words like “vouchsafe” since people don’t know what the heck it means. Heck, I’d even have to look it up. And when I use the word “gnostic,” I mean in the general sense, not in the narrow historical definition. Basically, I mean “knowledge” that you have to be in the inner circle to know. For example, the concept of Christ being “under” the elements of communion. Where did that come from? Maybe when the Lord’s Supper

Shadows of Knight - Gloria '69

"The Stones, Animals and Yardbirds took the Chicago Blues and gave it an English interpretation. We've taken the English version of the Blues and re-added a Chicago touch." The Shadows of Knight's self-description was fairly accurate. Although this mid-'60s garage band from the Windy City did not match the excellence of either their British or African-American idols, the teen energy of their recordings remains enjoyable, if not overwhelmingly original. The group took a tamer version of Them's cl

The Mojomatics: Don't Pretend That You Know Me

The Mojomatics: Don't Pretend That You Know Me photo: Antonio Campanella When people talk about the British Invasion it's always about the Beatles and the Stones taking over the charts in the USA. They just don't realise it was a world wide phenomenon, and it gave birth to hundreds of homegrown UK-influenced bands all over the world. And it just never stopped. Forty years after the fact The Mojomatics, a band from Venice, Italy, are churning fast-paced pop tunes that bring back the glory days

telecaster (the beautiful beast)

I know you thought Jimmy Page only ever played a Gibson Les Paul. Not true. He started his career with the ubiquitous Fender Telecaster.See here - The Yardbirds play Germany:What I find interesting and cool is that Page's Telecaster looks like something an alt-rock kind of guitarist would play today, with its funky post-production personal stylings and over-used grunginess. He was ahead (a head) of his time. I can only hope my Telecaster will become so wonderful. And don't you just love that Germ

Limited Edition 60s Print & Podcast

I met artist David Langley a few years ago when I traveled to see Big Star in St. Louis. Since then, we’ve become friends and collaborated on a few projects for the website. Being a collector at heart, I wanted to see what level of interest a series of limited-edition prints would generate. What you see below is the first print in what I hope will be a series of many. The proceeds generated from the sale of the first print will be used to create the next and so on. Each new print will be i
