Boomboxx is an album liberally spread with a generous helping of disjointed, stuttering beats, discordant riffs and bass-filled melodies which provide its backbone and wear the influence of DJ Shadow on its sleeve. Boy Eats Drum Machine, or John Ragel as his mum probably calls him, does however seem determined to get, what are in my opinion, unnecessary vocals into the music on an intermittent basis. If pushed, I would call Boomboxxx a crossover album. Half of its sound comes from the world of

Looking and sounding as if Juno’s Michael Cera was a formative influence, Planet Earth are two young lads playing quirky, personal guitar music. There wasn’t much polish to their act, but then they had enough charm to see them through, even if many in the crowd preferred to chat near the bar. Sleeping States managed to stem the crowd’s hubbub, at least for a couple of songs. Partly this was because the opening swashes of lo-fi sound made conversation pretty difficult, but partly it was becau

One of my favorite import series, the Radio One Live Lounge, have made available Volume Three of their impressive series. The two CD set featured live tracks and covers recorded on Radio One. It's a must for Anglophiles and those wanting obscure tracks from today's hottest artists, BAM! It is my opinion that this is their best compilation yet. Here's the tracklisting: Disc 1: 1. Duffy - Mercy 2. The Ting Tings - Standing In The Way Of Control (The Gossip cover) 3. Dizzee Rascal - That's
A lot of people have heard a lot about The Aeroplanes. A couple of years ago there was a huge fuss and furore surrounding who would be the first to get them to sign on the dotted line. What happened? Well let me tell you. First and foremost a key member has been spending time OHMS. One might say he has been on sabbatical. The debt has been paid back to society and once again The Aeroplanes are united as a four piece and ready to step back into the affray. They return with their debut album ‘Br

(Toronto) I really hate ska (ska punk) . When I hear the word ska, I immediately think of over weight, middle aged, tattooed guys in black suits and funny hats playing their trumpets, which happen to be connected to their wallet via a long chain. Now I didn’t know much about The Rumble Strips going into tonights show at the El Mo except that I really liked their song Girls And Boys In Love. In what little I read about the band before the show, the infamous ska word was mentioned more than onc
“Look at him!” shrieks the 11-year-old girl in the shocking pink tutu and stripy tights, as Joe Jonas, of the American pop-rock trio the Jonas Brothers, executes a Marty McFly knee slide across London’s O2 Arena stage. “He’s well lush.” For British tweens right now, “well lush” (rough translation: “My, what an attractive young man”) is perhaps the ultimate compliment. Trouble is, at a time when much of the old British pop infrastructure (”Top of the Pops,” Saturday morning kids’ TV, Smash Hits

RYKO Thea Gilmore’s new album is called Liejacker. What exactly is a liejacker? According to Thea, a liejacker is someone who exposes a lie to reveal the truth. Thea Gilmore is a liejacker. As she sees it, music is her platform for honest communication, her way of getting through the lies we live in everyday life and getting to the real raw emotional nub within each of us. Everything about Thea’s music carries that sense of honesty, from the emotionally laid-bare lyrics, to the somber yet beaut

Scream Queens - Digg Scream Queen To Queen Of Hell - Wed, 15 Oct 2008 Horror Girl #18. Back again with more Selma Blair. Why? Cause' she never seems to age. I lost track of how old she is. I think she might be in her 30's but she' so cute. I almost felt naughty looking at her cause' she's so young looking. But she is definitely legal and she's done nude parts in film and photos. So she's no girl but she does have... Scream Queens Supertrailer (SAW 6 is the prize) - Tue, 14 Oct 2008 Yet anoth

RADIO 1’s Live Lounge compilations have now become an almost permanent fixture on the pre-Christmas release schedule. But that’s a good thing as it remains a cut above most compilation albums for this time of year. Whereas most seek to recycle past hits centred on one particular theme (love songs, Christmas, etc), The Live Lounge remains a showcase for genuine musical talent. Heck, it even contains a few eye-opening surprises and poses some questions. In the case of participants such as McFly
