Squires, said the old man with the hat on. Shut up son, this ain’t no ballet lesson. First of all the pain has a purpose, it’s there to drive you away from something that isn’t good for you. And if ever you should crave bananas that is a lack of potassium, it is not a sign of your inner monkiness. That’s monkey-ness, Squires, not monk-i-ness and definitely not remotely Thelonius’ dance, you have to take your lessons where you find them cos the world in here ain’t like the world down there where

Photographer William Claxton died on Sunday at age 80. The cause was complications from congestive heart failure. Much has been written about Claxton in recent years, and he has become a favorite in galleries and among a young generation of photographers who admired the stylish realism of his work. He's best known for his photographs of jazz musicians such as Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and, most prominently, Chet Baker. One of his most famous images shows Baker at a p
I realize that it is unlikely that most of my readers will find this as funny as I do, but this pro-Obama button was posted yesterday at musikwissenbloggenschaft, and I had to share it: And for any who might be unfamiliar with the theramin, you can read about it here. And also, check out this video of a friend of mine playing a little Thelonius Monk on one:
by Robert Wilkinson When the Sun transits Libra, we are shown the light of entering into relationships, ideals, partying, and other pleasing social forms. It's the beginning of Autumn, with its focus on harvesting that which is agreeable to us, socializing and connecting with a greater "perfect vision" while seeing the endings in the old forms of our lives. Libra is self-initiating, interactive, and tries to see all the different points of view in any situation. The Sun in Libra shines the lig
IBMA Keynote Address available online posted by John on 10.11.08 @ 9:07 am Tags: Berklee, IBMA 2008 The IBMA has posted the text of the Keynote Address delivered by Berklee College of Music President Roger Brown at last week’s World Of Bluegrass Convention on their web site. His speech addressed two main themes: that the period when bluegrass music emerged was a time of uncertainly in the music business, and that many parallels could be drawn between the development of bebop jazz and
I am poor "replier" to your comments. Not because I don't want to reply. But because I have no system and had perhaps not enough time. Time I will have soon. And for the system, I will most probably follow Susanne's who is good at replying to any comment she has on her posts. Or make my "receipt answer" on your blog when I visit. But to return the courtesy right now, I have gone through some of your recent comments and here are my comments to yours. Jason wrote on “Jazz on the 5th, Nr.5": I Lo
What can I say that has not already been said about the great Mr. Monk, who would have celebrated his 91st birthday today. He was a true original - in his musical performances, his compositions, his sense of style. He was at ground zero when Be-Bop began in the early 1940's, and he played major roles in developing the sound of modern jazz. He played with anyone who was anyone, and his tutelage of John Coltrane was key to Trane's future successes. He fell in and out of vogue, but never pandered
Ninety years ago today, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Thelonius Monk was born. It took him longer than Charlie Parker or Dizzy Gillespie to make it big, but "Straight, No Chaser", "Round About Midnight", and "Blue Monk", along with his albums of interpretations of Duke Ellington, will live forever. John Coltrane once said: "I always had to be alert with Monk, because if you didn't keep aware all the time of what was going on you'd suddenly feel as if you'd stepped into an empty elevator sha

That’s how critic Ben Ratliff describes Jason Moran’s interpretation of a legendary 1959 concert by Thelonius Monk. In “Echoes of Monk, 50 Years Later,” the the New York Times writer puts Moran’s “In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall” in the context of other tributes set to mark the golden anniversary of Monk’s jazz milestone.
