We just gotta say “Happy Birthday” to one of our favorite guitarists and band leaders, Carlos Santana. He just turned sixty-one years old on July 20th.
I remember getting blown away by Santana’s performance at Woodstock with the extended jam of “Soul Sacrifice.” The bite of his guitar riffs on “Jingo” off the first [...]
Every couple of months or so, I spend a few hours running my e-fingers through the iTunes' "bins" looking for jazz gems that have been quietly added to the store's inventory. At iTunes, it seems, albums are flipped in abstractly, like baseball cards, barely promoted and sometimes even mislabeled. That happened with a James Moody collection I found recently. As jazz lovers know, iTunes doesn't do much to market jazz titles, preferring instead to plow the glitz into rap and rock. This means many
Some voices and the songs they sing seem to embody time and place in the growth of a nation. Maybe it's a timing thing, musical sensibility meeting up with social realities, and human need. Anyway, if that seems a little high falutin' for first thing on a Monday, this won't be: Gordon Lightfoot (whose music did all of the above, a few decades ago) turns 70 today. And after some poor health, a few years ago, he's back -- heading out on tour in 2009. Meanwhile, some chat around the Radio 2 Mor

Now picture this with Tito Puente drums playing behind it. Yesterday The Venetian’s fledgling show The Real Deal! announced a couple of tweaks, and today Sahara’s Raw Talent Live follows suit. The show will now be called Fuego Raw Talent in an effort to highlight the show’s Latin flair. About 30 percent of the show is in Spanish. We kind of hope they start to really push that angle, and start adding a bullfight to the production. Ole!
Miriam Makeba - “Mama Africa” “Listen - Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata - MP3″ Greetings all. I wasn’t expecting to do a midweek post*, but I heard the news of yet another important passing (no less that the ninth reported here in the last few months), and could not let it go by without taking note. The group of musical émigrés that came to the US from South Africa in the 1960s, including Hugh Masekela, Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semanya, and Jonas Gwangwa has always held a fascination for me. They all m

While working out on the elliptical the other day, I was thinking about my musical career and my former bandmates. I never became a professional musician, but I have certainly had some mild touches with great players who went on to become pro musicians.I first learned to play the drum set as a sophomore in high school. My very first band was based in a town called Forest Hills Gardens in Queens, New York. We were best friends with another band, and all of us used to jam with each other. The lead
Tito Puente Jnr “There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy, all over the world. My goal is to keep it alive, and in doing so, expose it to a whole new generation.” This same ethos is mirrored by the hot new label Big In Ibiza who having resigning the huge 90’s classic dance mixes of the timeless song ‘Oye Como Va’ have reworked it with fresh mixes for 2008 opening it up to a whole new audience. Having been covered consistently since it’s original Latin roots in the 19

photo: B Fresh Photography How did you get into making music, and how did arts education (or lack thereof) affect you and your music? I came into making music because I grew up around musicians, and I was influenced by different styles of music through the many vocalists in my family. My grandmother, Aminta Ortiz-Perez from Ponce, Puerto Rico, sang Tango, Boleros, and Plena; my grandfather, Felix Jesus Perez from San Juan, Puerto Rico, played the trumpet and was a vocalist; my aunt, Mila Ll
