Van Morrison’s new album ‘Keep It Simple’ comes out today, April 1st. You can still hear the heavy influence of American R&B and blues in Van’s voice and in all eleven songs, which he wrote.
The album conjures up a taste of “Tupelo Honey” and “Into the Mystic,” rather than “Domino” or [...]
words in edgeways with kate campbell Drawing deep from the well of Southern culture and history, Mississippi-raised Kate Campbell’s warm, wry and incisive songs tell vivid stories rooted in the past and present of her native South. Across the twelve albums she’s recorded since her 1995 debut Songs From The Levee, Campbell has explored a variety of musical styles and issues ranging from Civil Rights to spiritual enlightenment, avoiding didacticism or dogma to concentrate instead upon the lives
My six year old was three when he saw me watching Eat The Document and asked "Is that Bob Dylan, Dad? And is that The Band?" Very soon after that he determined that if there was harmony singing going on, that clearly meant that it was The Everly Brothers or The Beach Boys. My thirteen year old daughter made me beam with pride the other week. She was talking to her fourteen year old friend about Astral Weeks. I had no part in the conversation. She turned to her friend and said, "If you like Van
Back in 2003, Vice Admiral Timothy J. Keating, Commander of the American Fifth Fleet stood in front of the crew of the USS Constellation and warned them that the President was about to order the first strike of the Iraq war. Of course, being American - and clearly aware he was also standing in front of a bank of TV camera, Keating didn’t use those words. Instead what he said was this… “When the President says ‘go’… it’s hammer time.” No, really… Unfortunately almost no news organisation
and you're right. For even less insight I suggest his book 'No Surrender' on Van Morrison in which he takes his earlier book on the same subject and interweaves hilarious social and political observation about 'The Troubles'(c)
I listened again to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks tonight for the first time in years. It's one of those albums that reveals something new and wondrous every time I hear it. You realize how rare the truly great albums are. I liked this description of it from Tim Page of the Washington Post: "What a paradox this work is: an exploration of emotional healing that never forgets, minimizes or smoothes over the original wounds, an opulently poetic expression of near-autistic inarticulation."
Loathe as I was to admit it to myself, I was starting to get a little bored with the Drive-By Truckers. Then last Saturday's show happened. Does it represent a slightly new direction for the band I love? Or was it just a drunken hook-up that will never call, never buy me brunch, never even throw me a pity bang? A lengthy dissection of this and some kick-ass tunes after the jump. Hell No, I Ain't Happy Rockin' in the Free World from 11/8 Philly show. We all have regrets in life. The path
All weekend, I kept hearing songs that brought me back to moments that are very fond memories. What was amazing was that by hearing the songs, I was immediately transported into those moments and my senses immediately tried to find the same scents, sounds, and sights in the current time. Do you have music or songs like that? Songs that when you hear them, you are immediately transported back to a memory? It was a cool Saturday morning in the fall, not so different from the current day. The sc
“The pump don’t work ’cause the vandals took the handles” Bob Dylan from “Subterranean Homesick Blues“ Aren’t road trips great? Driving off to parts unknown for a big adventure with a bunch of friends. Anything could happen! Whether just a couple of days, a few weeks, or longer; it’s almost like being in a Bob Dylan song, a Jack Kerouac book, or a Tom Green movie. A road trip in any kind of vehicle is great; but for me, travelling in a van just adds another dimension to the greatness of a road
Yesterday I looked at what my algorithm thought were the ten top NCAA programs in terms of producing NFL talent. Today, we’ll look at some other teams of interest. Just missing the top 10 is my alma mater, a school which has had moderate success at various times, but isn’t thought of as a football power: Arizona St. QB Jake Plummer 76 RB John Henry Johnson 57 RB Gerald Riggs 54 RC Charley Taylor 82 RC Jerry Smith 71 RC John Jefferson 54 RC Larry Walton 42 T Marvel Smith 45 T Levi Jones 34 G Ra
Cognitive Dissonance Remember in the late 80's when Van Morrison got all boozy and sludgy and hard to understand? He went from "Bright Side of the Road" and "St. Dominic's Preview" to a kind of morose and bloated "Jesus Smiles on Ireland but Not on My Miserable Self." I attended a memorable for some not me because Good Lord what happens when old high school friends reunite in San Francisco and attend a Van the Man Concert at the Greek Theater in Berkeley? One minute I was there the next I w

Imelda May Love Tattoo •••½ Ambassador Musical styles pioneered in the ’40s and ’50s continue to influence modern trends, with rockabilly and cool vocal jazz in particular enjoying a large and widespread revival. From the striptease burlesque glamour of Dita Von Teese and the rockabilly fashions donned by suitably coiffed, gingham-touting celebrities and musicians alike, to the soulful, retro R&B sounds of singers like Amy Winehouse, Adele and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, it seems we’re

Besides Parameter this is the rarest release on the UK Deroy label but not only that.. it's absolutely superb!Taking symbolic cues from the burnt-down candle ends of loner blues-psych, and also the soul searching rasp of post-hippie Christian salvation, Northern Engl
This week’s contribution from “lifestyle epidemiology” was the report — from a huge study of 359,387 participants from nine countries in Europe — that spare tires, love handles, and bulges (the kind you battle) just ain’t good for you. The scientific term for this term is “abdominal adiposity.” Thus, the title of the paper, General and abdominal adiposity and risk of death in Europe (N Engl J Med. 2008;359:2105-20), by T. Pischon and 46 other authors. This is also related to the concept that
MONITOR BRONZE BR2 STEREO SPEAKERS , KEF has such a great tradition of building top-class speakers that when it produces a poor one it's a bit of a shock. But, make no mistake the C3S are poor. They cost £180, but have the air of something that costs only halfas much. Up against top class (and similarly priced) rivals from the likes of Monitor Audio and Dali they look out of their league_ Take a listen and that's how they sound, too. Dynamics, detail, finesse - you name it and the C3S fall far s
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes for Emma. The celebratory activities continued through the weekend with a small kid party on Saturday. Then the last soccer game of the season on Sunday, which was then celebrated with a little party, a weekend of cake, cake, and more cake. Its just past dinner on Sunday evening as I'm starting this post, and I'm thinking we're officially "celebrated" around here and are moving on. For now. I still say turning ten looks so great. Emma seems to be a bal

I go this from Books, Writing and Life (Matt's Blog) who got it from Rhonda's Corner of the World (another blog) who got it from somewhere else, I guess. This is a list of the top selling 150 books of the last 15 years. I am always interessted in what is considered Best Sellers...typically I end up not reading them...run as fast as I can away from that section of the book store. When looking over the list though, I saw a lot of books I have read and a ton of which are on my To Be Read pile so I
