With a little more research I find their website and blogs. It’s great stuff for record collectors and all kinds [...]

Chinese Democracy has finally arrived. One of the most highly anticipated albums in rock history, the long-awaited Chinese Democracy marks the first album of new material from Guns N’ Roses since 1991’s simultaneous release of Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. With a frenzied energy, Guns N’ Roses arrived on the music scene in the mid-’80s and rock was never the same. Now the enormously influential G N’ R is ready to rock once again. Chinese Democracy (Black Frog/Geffen Records) w
After a lengthy period with their albums out-of-print, Flipper is gearing up to re-release their catalog. The band adds: Finally, after way too many years out of print, The Classic Flipper Albums, originally released in the 1980s, will be re-released on vinyl by Four Men With Beards, and on CD by Water, both imprints under the Runt label. I meant to post this back in July; better late than never. Paste Magazine did an excellent job compiling a list of the coolest record stores in the US. Amoeba Records is hands down the best record store in the world. The magazine choose the Hollywood location, but the San Francisco and Berkley stores are just as good. The staff can be bit snobby, but they know their stuff. I’ve spent countless hours in both locations. In San Francisco you walk out on Haight Street and in Los Angeles you walk
Truth be told, we were initially going to do an Illustrated Guide on the Smiths, given this new compilation is out, but... well, it's a well worn path, isn't it? So many books, papers, articles, thinkpieces, conference minutes and scrawled notes have been penned on the whole story from New York Dolls letters to Severed Alliance and beyond that by now you can probably come up with a decent explanation yourselves that references working class mores, prosthlytising, English poetry, gender roles, ki
TVD sat down with Drew Marks, drummer for DC's The Moderate, to get his take on all things vinyl: "I was reintroduced to vinyl records by my friend Dan, a roommate at the time. It had been years since I had listened to my parent's albums growing up. I had almost forgotten how crisp the sound of a record is and that crackle when the needle is finding the groove. I immediately fell for that sound and started to build my own collection. There are so many things to love about records. The thrill
Courtesy of the lovely people at djhistory they have recently released a whole album of never-heard original disco, lovingly retouched by some of the world’s finest remixers. In 1979 the cream of French and British session musicians gathered to record some of the most scorching disco music ever committed to vinyl. As a series of ‘Disco & Co’ albums on the Tele Music library label, this ended up as radio talk-show sound-beds and backing music for car chases on French cop shows. Today an or
Linkblog for Nov 08 to Nov 15 November 19th, 2008 by Gerard McGarry. Here’s a bunch of cool music-related blog posts I’ve come across recently. And In the End: 25 Great Last Songs On An Album Although less and less relevant in the age of MP3s, an album’s sequencing used to be a vital part of the creative process. Important for pacing, creating a mood, and establishing a cohesive artistic statement, the order of the tracks was often mulled over as closely as the recording itself. Opening num
"Virtual vinyl" screenshot Today Is the Day's Steve Austin recently discussed the possibility of animated online artwork replacing physical album artwork, and I wondered why labels hadn't explored that yet. Well, the day has come. For Cradle of Filth's Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder, Roadrunner has set up a website of "virtual vinyl." It's supposed to replicate the LP experience - lyrics, artwork, something more than the typical badly tagged MP3. The "virtual vinyl" doesn't live up to its claim

Creedence Clearwater Revival released a most impressive run of six sizzling roots rock albums between the span of 1968 to 1970 (hear that, Axl?). Chief revivalist John Fogerty appropriated the sounds of the swampland — although he grew up in California — and crafted a distinctive, brand of Americana resulting in a slew of hit singles (and imitators). For years, most fans were content to enjoy the radio staples on collections like Chronicles Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Diehards - wanting to devour all
eBay have discovered good ol’ fashioned keyword stuffing. Surely some mistake? For my non-SEO geek readers, keyword stuffing is a spammy old-school SEO trick. It fell out of favour with most SEOs soon after the Declaration of American Independence. Google’s webmaster guidelines say… “Keyword stuffing” refers to the practice of loading a webpage with keywords in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google’s search results. Filling pages with keywords results in a negative user exp
Baltimore Electro-dance maniac Dan Deacon is not your average electronic artist. You won’t precisely understand what I mean until you witness one of his uplifting and truly unique live shows. What happens at these shows is a quasi-religious experience that celebrates our freedom of expression and the randomness of human nature. He brings on a new level of performance electronic music and is showing no signs of slowing down. Lately the man has been putting on the finishing touches to his next
Art Pepper (´25-´82) was the west coast king of the alto saxophone. Where most of his contemporaries never managed to shake off the enormous legacy left behind by the great Charlie Parker, Pepper had a tone all of his own almost right from the start. His personal life was a real mess, with heroin and related jail time being constants. For all the sordid details, read his amazing - and often almost embarrassingly honest - autobiography Straight Life, masterfully transcribed by his wife Laurie. Bu
Once again we bring you another amazing independent record label for you to check out to fulfill your rock and roll kicks. Claudia Leo, Vice President of No Fun Records took some time out of her busy schedule to fill me in on what No Fun Records is all about. Enjoy and remember, the best way to encourage small labels like No Fun is to buy their stuff! The Rock and Roll Report: How long has the label been around? How did it get started? Why the name “No Fun Records”? Claudia Leo: The label has
Today's new releases include Belle & Sebastien's The BBC Sessions on Matador. This double CD release is a marvelous collection of the band's performances for BBC Radio in their early years, including wonderful renditions of "The State that I Am In", "Judy and the Dream of Horses", and "Sleep the Clock Around." The recordings are from 1996 to 2001 and include four tracks from a Christmas show in 2001 that were never subsequently released on albums and feature Isobel Campbell's last appear
Check out my ipod - it holds 2,500 albums, has full size artwork (not crappy little pixelated mush) & fits in your pocket (if you happen to have a pocket the size of small car) One of the things about music that I love is the fact it is so embedded with memories & while that holds true of vinyl I am not so convinced of it applying to MP3s - will kids nowadays later reminisce about downloading an album & putting a few tracks in a playlist? Some of the records in that photo signify crucial, fo

I think I'm keen enough to want Foxtrot, SEBTP, Trick, and Wind and Wuthering on SACD-esp as never got these last two on CD. Also keen to see the videos in the box set, was too young to see them live in their classic eras-though nearly saw them in 79ish in Soton. Was rather impressed to be able to hear the passenger announcements [*] on Dark Side of the Moon on the recent SACD of that-I'd love to hear what the medium does with Wind and Wuthering etc. My Genesis vinyl albums tended to be Portug
