Van Morrison’s new album ‘Keep It Simple’ comes out today, April 1st. You can still hear the heavy influence of American R&B and blues in Van’s voice and in all eleven songs, which he wrote.
The album conjures up a taste of “Tupelo Honey” and “Into the Mystic,” rather than “Domino” or [...]

I thought id include some dancefloor music, its been a little while so… go on you can just stand next to the soundsystem, or while your waiting for the bus on your ipod and tap your foot if you like.! I think theres a bit of something for everyone in here a bit of disco The Whatnauts, Magic Disco Machine, African Suite funk The Dap-Kings, War house I Cube, The Black Dog, Metro, Inner City, The Mole and industrial Ministry, Kraftwerk (well kind of ) and even some mouldy oldies with a cameo fr
We live in an age where people are less than honest about their commitments. Wilson Pickett sang, “Don’t let the green grass fool you, Don’t let it change your mind” expresses the extremely deceptive nature of your perspective when you look across the fence from your current vantage point. The old saying, “The grass always looks ...Related ...
As George Thorogood (and the Delaware Destroyers) would say, “Who do you love?” Do you have a favorite singer? Who do you think should be the all-time greatest singer? Hint: You must R-E-S-P-E-C-T her. Rolling Stone Magazine put together a list of who they consider the greatest singers of all time, but I’m not too sure about their list. For example, Bob Dylan is a great songwriter but it is a huge stretch to say he is one of the top ten singers of all time - and ahead of Roy Orbison. And,
As many know, Washington Scandal supported the DEFEAT of Prop 8, supports the right of gay, bi, lesbian and transgendered couples to wed...it is called Equal Rights. I further support holding the Black and Mormon Communities accountable for their BIGOTRY...even though so far the gay community has only targeted the Mormon Church Community. In continuing support of those who opposed Proposition 8, I am posting below the various lists I could find of individuals and companies WHO SUPPORTED Proposti
The Aleem Brothers discuss with Michael Tillery of The Starting Five the release of original material recorded with the legendary Jimi Hendrix before his passing. This deal, coordinated with the twins, Hip Hop artist and producer Spyda D and Jimi’s estate, has been in the works for over a year. This comes a day after Jimi Hendrix’ drummer, Mitch Mitchell, died. The world is transitioning to a new state of consciousness. For most who were around when the children of this ever changing soci
Whether your idea of soul music is Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd or Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, you’d better do yourself a favor and get hip to the power of David Brinston, a.k.a. the Love Maker. A part of the underground soul circuit kept alive by labels like Malaco and Ecko, and artists like Marvin Sease (The Candy Licker), Brinston is the real deal. His alternately sweet and gruff vocals have some Al Green — okay… a lot of Al Green — in them; the guy could easily have fit on Hi right alo

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on this date in 1815. Today is also the birthday … of Wallace Shawn. The actor-playwright is 65. Inconceivable! He’s the son of the former New Yorker editor William Shawn, and he’s become well known as a character actor in Hollywood movies such as The Princess Bride (1987) and Clueless (1995). Most people don’t know that he’s also an avant-garde playwright. When he got out of college, a lot of his friends took jobs writing for his father’s magazine, but Shawn
By Kelvin Powell The state of Texas is staking a claim as the most fertile of grounds for big-time high-school girls basketball and it’s doing it in a big way…a really big way. As in Houston’s Nimitz High’s 6-8 forward Brittany Griner leads a bevy of talented post players from the state of Texas. Griner, featured in the next issue of SLAM and discussed here on Slamonline last week by Aggrey, is the Preseason National Player of the Year according to Roundball Journal and gaining notoriety natio
By Travis Woods In our review for their newest album, Don’t Dance (review here), we described The Monolators and their music as a speed-addled charge of pulsing, punk-popped pop, one that mixes the catchy bubblegum of ‘50s rock and the headiness of ‘60s pop with the wild-eyed glow of ‘70s punk. Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Eli Chartkoff, his wife, drummer Mary Chartkoff, lead guitarist Tom Bogdon, and bassist Ashley Jex (aka Jax of Rock Insider and JAXART), the Monolators are one of the

Etta James Rocks the House. Argo Records. An incredible live show from the New Era Club in Nashville, Tenn. in 1963. Features guitarist David T. Walker fronting a killer band. This album rivals B.B. King Live at the Regal for best live blues record ever. Etta James sings so tough, so ballsy, I can’t think of another singer to compare her to. She almost makes even Wilson Pickett and James Brown sound like wimps. On a couple of songs, she does some scatting you have to hear to believe. Bes
I have a lot of free time. Christ, do I. I didn’t expect that in college, but I want to take advantage of it. And my “project,” so to speak, right now is to watch a lot of movies and listen to a lot of music and catch up on the things I don’t know so much about right now. Movies was easy for me - I’ve seen almost nothing older than a few years, and so I’ve got a lot to hit at. Music was tougher, because I have very eccentric listening habits. I know splotches of music: Bach but not Mozart (well
Rory's. Navigate Subscribe Archives Random Seek 18 seconds ago I’ve finished my second revision of Quarksummer Nights, and it’s approaching the level of ultraprecision I want it to be at. This is the first poem I’ve written that I think is really magnificent. Permalink I opened with a Richard Siken poem long, long ago. Here’s another one, for those of you that still haven’t read Siken. It’s long, but it’s beautiful and it will suck you in even if you hate literature and wr

I've rhapsodized about Stax soul pioneer/genius, the late Wilson Pickett and his performance in Soul to Soul many times. Fittingly, I just watched his show again tonight (and for probably the 60th time), in gleeful celebration. One of the many remarkable (and my favorite) moments of Soul to Soul , the 1971 concert film chronicling a group of R&B, Jazz and Rock stars visiting Ghana, Africa for a history-making concert, features a joyous, somewhat amazed Pickett singing “Land of a Thous
