David Cook Wins American Idol 2008

May 22nd, 2008
By Mike

So David Cook is the new American Idol.  He had my vote early on this season, although I was beginning to think David Archuleta would win after last night’s performances.
But when David Cook appeared on stage with ZZ Top tonight, well that was just perfect. He’s got a natural rock star vibe [...]

Dallas International Guitar Show

April 22nd, 2008
By Mike

The 31st Annual Dallas International Guitar Festival and MusicFest was awesome, as usual. We saw some new things this year, like Trillium’s new tube guitar amps. The design and cabinetry caught my eye, and their great tone caught my ears, so I stopped to chat. Scott told me this is Trillium’s [...]

Happy 58th Birthday Billy !

Billy also has a very distinctive sound that is helped along by using [...]

Where the James leila stand on Titan.

Schools are expected to open as usual today. Erlewine also makes guitars, including ones for Paul McCartney and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. His guitar playing days, however, were not over. Allison O’Malley, bachelor of science in therapeutic studies. There’s a tendency to demonise these guys, but when they really get into this stuff they start taking Alexander Technique courses to work on their posture, improv courses to be more enteral, going to vocal coaches or personal trainers or learning about

The Balanese Room - Galveston, Texas, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Galveston, Texas, United States Galveston is an island on the Gulf of Mexico, about an hour's drive south of Houston.  The south end of the island is the beach side, although the beach is not very impressive.  It is dirty and muddy in most places that I've seen.  This is due to Galveston being downstream from the river mouth of the Mississipi which washes up its contents onto the Gulf coast of Eastern Texas. A number of built up lon

ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons Visits Beale on Broadway

Bud from Beale on Broadway passed on an email and some pictures of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, who stopped by the club last Monday night, the day before his band played the Fabulous Fox. It was just another magic Monday here at the club when we were treated to the presence of one rock 'n' roll's elite. His little ole band from Texas performed at the Fox last tuesday. I got to spend 10 minutes with Mr. Billy Gibbons himself (a real sharp dressed man) as he took a liking to my vintage guitar amp colle

Billy Gibbons Pt. 3: "We Were Fairly Confident," Taking Eliminator to the Dance Floor, The Videos, Eliminator In Hindsight

Note: Part 1 of this interview is here; part 2 is here. Rocks Off: Did the band think you had a hit record when you wrapped the album? Billy Gibbons: Yeah. We were fairly confident we had stumbled into something that was really solid. In the middle of the disco craze, this was our solid rock music message, and it couldn’t have been stronger at the time. I don’t know, the Stones had gotten away with “Miss You” and Rod Stewart [sings], “Do ya think I’m sexy,” whatever that thing was. RO: But

Songs of Men with Mullets and Women with Linebacker Shoulderpads

New Pretenders Record

Saw this nice write-up of Chrissie Hynde and the first Pretenders record in six years, "Break Up the Concrete," in the NYTimes (and it's not by steve's fave, that Saleh fellow).“I don’t think the world really needs another Pretenders record. But frankly, I was getting embarrassed because we hadn’t made a record in so long. And we were doing a lot of touring, and I just can’t stomach doing those old songs anymore. It’s just torture.”As she began to work on new songs, she found her direction chang

Have mercy, a haw, haw, haw, haw....

One day this week, I was going to get lunch and I was listening to the new "Classic Rock" station on the radio. The played "Call Me" by Blondie and then they played "The Grange" by ZZ TOP.Man, I love that song. The percussion, the guitar...what an infectious beat.Anyway, after that, while I was still jamming and bopping away to the beats of ZZ Top, they cut right to another song: "Always Wanna Be With You", by Hootie and the Blowfish.Hootie and the Mutha-humping Blowfish!?!?!?!?!?On a classic ro

The night was not perfect Art sound as slight lighting problems at the beginning October 4th, 2008 by firdaus LOS ANGELES Reuters Rap star Kanye West was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday after scuffling with photographers and smashing a camera, an airport spokesman said. Obama takes the low drama approach. You’ve got The Blasters kicking things off with Dark Night followed by some ZZ Top with Mexican Blackbird. Should be a good Fab Four fix until Curtiss A’s show in De

Fall movie season still struggling to get off the ground

After a fun, goofy summer of some good blockbusters (Tropic Thunder, Wall-E) and a few wonderful weird little movies (Hamlet 2, The Edge of Heaven), the fall season seems to be off to a slow start. Some of the movies I've been most interested in all year are out now, but nothing has created much of a sensation. Choke sounds bloodless and dull. Miracle at St. Anna unfortunately seems a little corny and stodgy, two words that I don't think could be used to describe any other Spike Lee movie. Thi

Willie Nelson Golfs in South Charleston

by Matthew Thompson, Luke R. Mitchell http://www.dailymail.com CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On the road again, Willie Nelson had the opportunity for a little leisure time before he performed at the Clay Center this week. He spent it swinging a club at Little Creek Park Golf Course. Matt Petts, an employee in the park’s pro shop, said an unidentified person called Monday afternoon asking if a “pretty long” tour bus could fit in the club’s parking lot. Petts, 24, answered yes, but said he was uns
